Effect of Extension Contact on Farmers’ Use of Certified Seeds

Abstract

Certified seeds are important agricultural inputs produced and tested to meet established standards of genetic purity, physical quality, germination, and varietal identity. The use of certified seeds can support improved crop establishment, uniformity, yield potential, and production efficiency. However, farmers’ use of certified seeds may depend on their access to appropriate information and technical guidance concerning seed quality, selection, availability, handling, and application. Agricultural extension contact can provide an important channel through which farmers obtain such information and support. This study will examine the effect of extension contact on farmers’ use of certified seeds. It will assess how the frequency and quality of interaction between farmers and extension agents influence farmers’ awareness, knowledge, and use of certified seed varieties. The study will also examine the extent to which extension agents provide information on seed quality, varietal selection, seed sources, planting practices, and proper seed handling. The study will focus on the frequency of extension visits, accessibility of extension agents, advisory information, farmer training, field demonstrations, and communication channels used to provide information about certified seeds. Farmers’ use of certified seeds will be assessed based on seed selection, sources of certified seeds, frequency of use, varietal choice, seed handling, storage, and adherence to recommended planting practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate assessment instruments. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to determine the relationship between extension contact and farmers’ use of certified seeds. The study is expected to reveal that regular and relevant extension contact may increase farmers’ use of certified seeds. Farmers who interact frequently with extension agents and receive practical information and demonstrations may demonstrate greater awareness and utilization of certified seed varieties. The findings may also reveal that limited extension contact can reduce farmers’ access to information about certified seed sources, quality standards, varietal suitability, and recommended use. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, seed producers, seed certification agencies, government agricultural institutions, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for improving seed-related extension programmes, strengthening farmer education, promoting access to quality seeds, and supporting the dissemination of improved crop varieties. The study concludes that effective extension contact can contribute to farmers’ knowledge and use of certified seeds by providing relevant information and technical guidance. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension organisations strengthen regular farm visits, farmer training, seed demonstrations, and timely advisory services to promote greater access to and use of certified seeds among farmers.
