Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Agribusiness Planning Practices

Abstract

Agribusiness planning practices involve the systematic process of setting business objectives, identifying agricultural enterprises, estimating production and operating costs, assessing markets, managing resources, and planning financial activities associated with farm businesses. Effective planning can help farmers make informed decisions, manage resources efficiently, reduce avoidable losses, and improve the organization and sustainability of agricultural enterprises. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills needed to understand and apply appropriate agribusiness planning practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of agribusiness planning practices. It will assess the extent to which extension education improves farmers’ understanding and application of planning practices related to agricultural enterprises. The study will also examine the relationship between farmers’ exposure to extension education and their adoption of agribusiness planning practices. The study will focus on extension education activities such as farmer training, workshops, group discussions, farm visits, demonstrations, and dissemination of business-related agricultural information. It will examine farmers’ adoption of practices such as setting farm business objectives, enterprise selection, production planning, cost estimation, budgeting, market planning, resource allocation, sales planning, record keeping, risk planning, and assessment of expected returns. Attention will also be given to farmers’ knowledge of market opportunities, input requirements, production schedules, and financial considerations in agribusiness planning. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension education and adoption of agribusiness planning practices. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of agribusiness planning practices. Adoption levels across different planning practices will also be assessed. The study is expected to reveal that extension education has a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of agribusiness planning practices. Farmers who receive regular training, practical guidance, and business-oriented agricultural information may be more likely to adopt practices such as budgeting, cost estimation, enterprise selection, market planning, and resource allocation. However, limited access to extension education, inadequate business knowledge, poor record-keeping habits, limited financial information, and insufficient access to market data may constrain farmers’ adoption of effective agribusiness planning practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agribusiness operators, farmer organizations, financial institutions, government agricultural agencies, development organizations, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders. The findings may assist extension agencies in developing practical programmes that combine agricultural production knowledge with basic agribusiness planning skills. Improved adoption of planning practices may support better farm management, informed investment decisions, efficient resource use, improved market participation, and stronger agricultural business performance. The study concludes that extension education can contribute to improved adoption of agribusiness planning practices by providing farmers with relevant knowledge, practical skills, and business-oriented guidance. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen agribusiness education through practical training, budgeting exercises, market planning activities, farm business demonstrations, and continuous advisory support. Collaboration among extension agencies, farmer organizations, financial institutions, agribusiness stakeholders, research institutions, and government agencies should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ access to business information and planning support.
