Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Collective Produce Storage Practices

Abstract

Collective produce storage involves farmers jointly storing harvested agricultural products through shared storage facilities, cooperative arrangements, community warehouses, or other organised storage systems. Such practices can help farmers reduce post-harvest losses, improve produce preservation, maintain product quality, and strengthen their ability to market produce when prices and market conditions are more favourable. Extension education can provide farmers with knowledge and practical skills on appropriate storage methods, facility management, produce handling, and collective storage arrangements. Examining the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of collective produce storage practices is therefore important for improving post-harvest management and agricultural marketing. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of collective produce storage practices. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education and determine how such education influences their knowledge and adoption of shared storage practices. The study will also examine farmers’ participation in collective storage arrangements and identify the major practices used to preserve and manage agricultural produce after harvest. The study will focus on farmers’ use of cooperative warehouses, community storage facilities, shared grain stores, collective cold storage facilities where applicable, and other group-based produce storage arrangements. It will examine practices such as proper cleaning and sorting of produce, moisture control, pest management, packaging, stacking, storage hygiene, inventory recording, facility maintenance, and monitoring of stored produce. The study will also consider farmers’ knowledge of storage management, access to extension education, participation in farmer organisations, availability of storage facilities, storage costs, and perceived benefits of collective storage. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension education, knowledge of collective storage practices, participation in collective storage arrangements, and level of adoption. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of collective produce storage practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive greater exposure to extension education may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge and adoption of collective produce storage practices. Extension education may improve farmers’ understanding of proper storage techniques, group storage management, produce handling, pest control, and quality preservation. Collective storage may also provide opportunities for farmers to reduce individual storage costs and improve their ability to hold produce for more favourable market conditions. However, inadequate storage facilities, poor management, limited finance, maintenance costs, and challenges associated with collective decision-making may constrain adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, farmer cooperatives, agricultural marketing organisations, storage facility managers, government agencies, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide information on how extension education can support farmers in adopting organised storage practices and reducing post-harvest losses. Extension organisations and farmer groups may use the findings to develop practical training programmes on collective storage management, while relevant agencies may use the information to improve access to appropriate shared storage facilities. The study concludes that extension education can contribute to farmers’ adoption of collective produce storage practices by improving their knowledge of appropriate storage techniques and strengthening their capacity to participate in organised storage arrangements. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes provide practical education on collective storage management, produce handling, pest control, storage hygiene, record keeping, and facility maintenance. Relevant stakeholders should also support farmer organisations with appropriate storage infrastructure, technical assistance, affordable storage services, and effective management systems to promote wider adoption of collective produce storage practices.
