Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Ginger Production Practices

Abstract

Ginger production is an important agricultural activity that contributes to food supply, income generation, employment creation, and agricultural enterprise diversification. Ginger is widely valued for its culinary, medicinal, and commercial uses, creating opportunities for farmers to participate in both local and wider agricultural markets. However, successful ginger production requires appropriate knowledge of land preparation, selection of healthy planting materials, planting methods, soil fertility management, weed control, pest and disease management, harvesting, and postharvest handling. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills needed to improve their production practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of ginger production practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education, determine their level of knowledge of recommended ginger production techniques, and examine the extent to which extension education influences their adoption of improved production practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of production information provided to ginger farmers. The study will focus on extension education, ginger production practices, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, planting material selection, land preparation, planting methods, spacing, soil fertility management, mulching, weed management, pest and disease control, irrigation, harvesting, and postharvest handling. Information will be obtained from ginger farmers to determine their exposure to extension education and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in their farming activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected ginger farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of ginger production practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended ginger production practices. Farmers who receive regular extension education, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory support may demonstrate greater adoption of improved planting materials, appropriate planting methods, soil fertility management, mulching, weed control, pest and disease management, harvesting, and postharvest practices. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact and timely production information contribute to better application of recommended ginger production techniques. The study will be useful to ginger farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes designed to promote improved ginger production and enhance farmers’ technical capacity. The findings may also assist extension personnel in identifying production practices that require greater attention during farmer education and advisory activities. The study concludes that extension education is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of ginger production practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farmer education, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services for ginger producers. Extension programmes should emphasize improved planting materials, appropriate crop management, weed and pest control, harvesting, and postharvest handling to support sustainable ginger production and improved farm productivity.
