Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Manure Storage Practices

Abstract

The study examines the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of manure storage practices. Proper manure storage is an important aspect of livestock and crop production because it helps preserve manure nutrients, reduce nutrient losses, prevent environmental contamination, and facilitate the effective use of manure as an organic soil amendment. Extension education can provide farmers with knowledge and practical guidance on appropriate manure storage methods, storage facilities, handling procedures, and environmental protection measures. Examining the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of manure storage practices is therefore important for promoting effective manure management and sustainable agricultural production. The study will determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of manure storage practices. It will specifically assess farmers’ exposure to extension education and the extent to which they adopt practices such as selecting suitable storage locations, using appropriate storage structures, protecting manure from excessive rainfall, reducing nutrient losses, covering stored manure where appropriate, preventing runoff, maintaining storage areas, and handling stored manure safely. The study will also examine the contribution of extension education, training, demonstrations, and advisory services to farmers’ adoption of appropriate manure storage practices. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension education and their adoption of manure storage practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be used to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of manure storage practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension education contributes positively to farmers’ adoption of appropriate manure storage practices. Farmers who receive relevant training, demonstrations, and technical guidance are expected to demonstrate greater adoption of practices that protect stored manure from nutrient losses, excessive moisture, runoff, and contamination. The study may also reveal variations in adoption based on farmers’ exposure to extension education, availability of suitable storage facilities, livestock production systems, and access to extension personnel. The findings will provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, livestock development agencies, policymakers, farmer organizations, environmental management institutions, and other stakeholders involved in sustainable agricultural production. The findings are expected to demonstrate the importance of extension education in improving farmers’ knowledge and application of appropriate manure storage practices. Such information can support the development of practical extension programmes that promote effective manure management, soil fertility improvement, resource conservation, and environmentally responsible farming. The study will conclude that extension education can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills for adopting appropriate manure storage practices. It will recommend strengthening extension education on manure management, increasing practical demonstrations and farm visits, promoting suitable manure storage facilities, and improving farmers’ access to technical information on nutrient conservation and environmental protection. Improved extension education is expected to enhance manure management and contribute to sustainable livestock and crop production.
