Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Nursery Sanitation Practices

Abstract

Nursery sanitation practices are important components of effective nursery management because they help maintain clean and healthy conditions for the production of strong and viable seedlings. Poor sanitation in nurseries can encourage the spread of pests, diseases, weeds, and other contaminants that may reduce seedling quality and survival. Extension education can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills needed to understand and adopt appropriate sanitation practices for maintaining healthy nursery environments. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of nursery sanitation practices. It will assess the extent to which extension education influences farmers’ knowledge and use of recommended sanitation measures in agricultural nurseries. The study will also examine the contribution of extension training, demonstrations, advisory visits, and information dissemination to farmers’ adoption of appropriate nursery sanitation practices. The study will focus on extension education, nursery sanitation, farmers’ knowledge, nursery hygiene, removal of infected seedlings, cleaning of nursery tools and containers, weed control, growing media sanitation, waste disposal, pest prevention, disease prevention, nursery management, seedling health, extension contact, and adoption of sanitation practices. It will also assess farmers’ sources of information on nursery sanitation and identify challenges that may limit their ability to implement recommended sanitation measures. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension education, knowledge of nursery sanitation practices, and level of adoption of recommended sanitation measures. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of nursery sanitation practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of nursery sanitation practices. Farmers who receive regular extension training, practical demonstrations, and advisory services may demonstrate greater knowledge and use of practices such as cleaning nursery tools and containers, removing diseased seedlings, controlling weeds, managing nursery waste, and maintaining hygienic growing conditions. Adoption may also vary according to farmers’ access to extension services, availability of sanitation materials, nursery experience, and perceived importance of sanitation practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, nursery operators, horticultural producers, agricultural cooperatives, government agricultural agencies, development organisations, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes on nursery management and seedling health. The findings may also assist stakeholders in developing practical training and demonstration programmes that promote affordable and effective nursery sanitation practices among farmers. The study concludes that extension education can contribute to improved adoption of nursery sanitation practices by increasing farmers’ knowledge, awareness, and practical skills in maintaining healthy nursery environments. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, demonstrations, and advisory services on nursery hygiene, tool and container sanitation, waste management, weed control, and disease prevention. Farmers should also be encouraged to apply appropriate sanitation practices to improve seedling health, reduce nursery losses, and support successful crop establishment.
