Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Seed Lot Identification Practices

Abstract

Seed lot identification practices involve the systematic labelling, recording, tracking, and differentiation of groups or batches of seeds according to relevant information such as crop variety, source, production period, quantity, quality status, and storage location. Proper identification of seed lots can help farmers maintain accurate seed records, monitor seed quality, trace planting materials, and prevent the mixing or inappropriate use of different seed stocks. Extension education can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to adopt appropriate seed lot identification practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of seed lot identification practices. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education on seed lot identification, determine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended identification practices, and examine how extension education influences farmers’ ability to properly label, record, differentiate, and track seed lots. The study will focus on extension education, seed lot identification, seed labelling, seed source records, crop variety identification, seed production dates, seed quantity records, storage location records, seed quality status, lot numbering, traceability, and seed stock management. It will also examine farmers’ adoption of practices involving proper labelling of seed containers, maintenance of seed lot records, separation of different seed lots, and tracking of seed movement from storage to planting. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires to assess their exposure to extension education and adoption of seed lot identification practices. The data will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of seed lot identification practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of seed lot identification practices. Farmers who receive relevant extension information and practical training may demonstrate greater adoption of practices such as seed labelling, lot numbering, source documentation, separation of seed stocks, storage identification, and record keeping. The study may also identify specific aspects of seed lot identification where farmers require additional education and technical support. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, seed producers, seed companies, community seed organisations, agricultural research institutions, government agricultural agencies, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for developing extension programmes that improve farmers’ understanding and application of seed lot identification practices. The findings may also assist farmers in improving seed traceability, reducing the risk of seed mixing, maintaining accurate records, and managing planting materials more effectively. The study concludes that extension education can provide important knowledge and practical skills for improving farmers’ adoption of seed lot identification practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes provide practical training on seed labelling, lot numbering, source documentation, record keeping, stock separation, traceability, and proper seed storage identification to strengthen farmers’ seed management practices.
