Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Sesame Intercropping Practices

Abstract

Sesame intercropping is an important crop production practice that can enable farmers to make efficient use of available land, diversify farm output, improve resource utilization, and potentially reduce production risks. The effectiveness of intercropping depends on appropriate crop combinations, planting arrangements, spacing, timing, and management practices. However, farmers may have limited knowledge of suitable intercropping techniques and their proper application. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant information and practical skills needed to adopt improved sesame intercropping practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education, determine their knowledge of recommended sesame intercropping techniques, and examine the extent to which extension education influences their adoption of appropriate intercropping practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of information provided to farmers regarding crop combinations and intercropping management. The study will focus on extension education, sesame intercropping practices, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, crop combination selection, planting arrangement, spacing, planting time, crop density, soil fertility management, weed control, moisture management, pest management, harvesting, and adoption of recommended intercropping techniques. Information will be obtained from sesame farmers to determine their exposure to extension education and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in their farming activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected sesame farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended sesame intercropping practices. Farmers who receive regular extension education, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory support may demonstrate greater adoption of appropriate crop combinations, planting arrangements, spacing, planting schedules, crop density, weed management, and other intercropping practices. The study may also indicate that practical extension education and regular advisory contact contribute to farmers’ ability to apply intercropping techniques effectively. The study will be useful to sesame farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes designed to promote improved sesame intercropping practices. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that address farmers’ specific needs regarding crop combinations, planting arrangements, and management of intercropped sesame fields. The study concludes that extension education is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, regular farm visits, field training, and follow-up advisory services. Extension programmes should emphasize suitable crop combinations, appropriate spacing and planting arrangements, crop management, and timely field operations to support effective sesame intercropping and sustainable farm productivity.
