Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Knowledge of Kola Nut Production

Abstract

Kola nut is an important tree crop with economic, cultural, social, and commercial value in many farming communities. It provides income to farmers and contributes to agricultural diversification and local trade. However, effective kola nut production requires adequate knowledge of appropriate production and management practices. Limited access to technical information may reduce farmers’ ability to apply recommended practices and may affect productivity. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical guidance needed to improve kola nut production. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ knowledge of kola nut production. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education and determine their level of knowledge of recommended kola nut production practices. The study will also examine the relationship between participation in extension education and farmers’ knowledge of kola nut production. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of suitable planting materials, site selection, land preparation, nursery establishment, seedling selection, planting methods, spacing, shade management, soil fertility management, weed control, pest and disease management, moisture conservation, pruning, harvesting, and post-harvest handling of kola nuts. It will also consider farmers’ access to extension agents, training programmes, farm demonstrations, advisory visits, and agricultural information on improved kola nut production techniques. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from kola nut farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension education and knowledge of recommended production practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, knowledge-level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ knowledge of kola nut production. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who have greater exposure to extension education may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of recommended kola nut production practices. Participation in training, practical demonstrations, advisory visits, and access to relevant agricultural information may improve farmers’ understanding of crop establishment, soil management, pest and disease control, harvesting, and other production activities. The study may also identify challenges such as inadequate extension contact, limited training opportunities, and insufficient access to improved production information. The study will be useful to kola nut farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, research institutions, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, farmer organisations, and other stakeholders involved in tree crop production. It may provide useful information for identifying knowledge gaps among kola nut farmers and strengthening extension education programmes. The findings may also assist extension organisations in developing practical training and demonstration activities suited to farmers’ production needs. The study concludes that extension education is important for improving farmers’ knowledge of kola nut production practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, field demonstrations, advisory visits, and dissemination of relevant technical information on kola nut production. Farmers should also be encouraged to participate in extension programmes and access improved production technologies to strengthen their knowledge, improve farm management, and enhance kola nut productivity.
