Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Knowledge of Onion Storage Techniques

Abstract

Onion is an important vegetable crop that contributes to household food supply, income generation, and agricultural marketing. However, onions are highly susceptible to deterioration after harvest when appropriate storage conditions and handling practices are not maintained. Effective storage techniques can help reduce post-harvest losses, preserve onion quality, extend shelf life, and improve farmers’ ability to market their produce at suitable times. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant information, practical training, demonstrations, and technical guidance on appropriate onion storage practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ knowledge of onion storage techniques. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education and determine how such education influences their understanding of appropriate methods for storing onions after harvest. The study will also examine farmers’ existing knowledge of onion storage practices and identify the major sources of information through which they learn about improved storage techniques. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of onion curing, sorting, grading, drying, ventilation, temperature and moisture management, storage structures, stacking, packaging, pest control, disease prevention, and regular inspection of stored onions. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of selecting suitable storage locations, maintaining proper airflow, removing damaged bulbs, and preventing excessive moisture accumulation. The study will further consider farmers’ access to extension education, frequency of extension contact, participation in demonstrations, access to storage facilities, and sources of agricultural information. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension education and their level of knowledge of onion storage techniques. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ knowledge of onion storage techniques. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to extension education may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of improved onion storage techniques. Extension education may improve farmers’ understanding of proper curing, sorting, ventilation, moisture management, pest control, storage structure selection, and regular monitoring of stored onions. However, challenges such as inadequate storage facilities, limited access to appropriate storage structures, insufficient technical information, high storage costs, and limited extension contact may contribute to knowledge gaps among farmers. The study will be useful to onion farmers, agricultural extension agents, farmer organisations, agricultural development agencies, government institutions, policymakers, storage facility providers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information on the contribution of extension education to farmers’ knowledge of onion storage and post-harvest management. Extension organisations may use the findings to strengthen practical storage training and demonstrations, while agricultural development agencies may use the information to support improved storage facilities and technical assistance for farmers. The study concludes that extension education can contribute to improving farmers’ knowledge of onion storage techniques by providing relevant information, practical demonstrations, and technical guidance. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes strengthen education on onion curing, sorting, drying, ventilation, moisture management, pest control, storage structures, and quality preservation. Relevant stakeholders should also improve farmers’ access to appropriate storage facilities, technical support, and practical training to reduce post-harvest losses and maintain the quality and market value of stored onions.
