Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Use of Digital Farm Management Tools

Abstract

Digital farm management tools have become increasingly important in modern agriculture by providing farmers with technologies that support farm planning, record keeping, crop monitoring, resource management, financial tracking, and production decision-making. These tools may include mobile farm management applications, digital record-keeping platforms, farm planning software, weather applications, GPS-based tools, and other digital technologies used to improve the management of farm activities. Extension education can play an important role in helping farmers understand and effectively use these technologies by providing relevant information, practical training, demonstrations, and technical guidance. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ use of digital farm management tools. It will assess the level of farmers’ exposure to extension education and determine how such education influences their knowledge and use of digital tools for managing farm activities. The study will also examine farmers’ awareness of available digital farm management technologies and the extent to which extension education supports their adoption and regular use. The study will focus on farmers’ use of mobile farm management applications, digital farm record systems, GPS-based farm mapping tools, weather and climate applications, digital crop monitoring tools, farm budgeting applications, and online agricultural information platforms. It will examine their use for farm planning, production monitoring, input management, labour management, record keeping, financial management, farm mapping, weather monitoring, and decision-making. The study will also consider farmers’ digital literacy, access to smartphones, internet connectivity, availability of extension education, cost of digital tools, and technical support. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension education, knowledge of digital farm management tools, frequency of use, and specific applications of the tools in farm management. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ use of digital farm management tools. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive greater exposure to extension education may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge and use of digital farm management tools. Extension education may improve farmers’ understanding of the functions and practical applications of digital technologies and encourage their use in planning, monitoring, record keeping, resource allocation, and farm decision-making. However, challenges such as inadequate digital skills, poor internet connectivity, limited access to smartphones, cost of data services, and insufficient technical support may continue to restrict the effective use of these tools. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, digital agriculture providers, agricultural development agencies, government institutions, farmer organisations, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide information on the role of extension education in improving farmers’ access to and use of digital farm management technologies. Extension organisations may use the findings to strengthen digital agriculture training programmes, while technology providers may use the information to develop more accessible and user-friendly tools for farmers. The study concludes that extension education can contribute to improving farmers’ knowledge and use of digital farm management tools by providing practical information, training, demonstrations, and technical support. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes incorporate digital farm management education into their advisory activities and provide practical demonstrations that enable farmers to develop confidence in using digital technologies. Relevant stakeholders should also support farmers with digital literacy training, affordable internet access, appropriate devices, and continuous technical assistance to promote effective use of digital farm management tools.
