Effect of Extension Education on Fish Farmers’ Adoption of Fish Harvesting Techniques

Abstract

Fish harvesting is an important stage of aquaculture production because appropriate harvesting techniques help farmers obtain quality fish, minimise physical damage, reduce losses, and improve market value. Poor harvesting practices can cause injuries to fish, unnecessary mortality, contamination, stress, and reduced product quality. Extension education can provide fish farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills needed to adopt appropriate harvesting techniques and improve the efficiency of fish production. This study will examine the effect of extension education on fish farmers’ adoption of fish harvesting techniques. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education and determine the extent to which such education influences their adoption of recommended fish harvesting practices. The study will also examine the sources of harvesting information available to fish farmers and identify the challenges affecting their adoption of improved harvesting techniques. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of harvesting practices such as determining appropriate harvesting time, partial and complete harvesting, proper use of nets and harvesting equipment, careful fish handling, sorting and grading, minimising physical damage, hygienic harvesting, appropriate holding of harvested fish, and preparation for transportation and marketing. It will also consider farmers’ participation in extension education programmes, practical demonstrations, frequency of extension contact, access to technical information, and availability of appropriate harvesting equipment. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from fish farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their exposure to extension education and adoption of fish harvesting techniques. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, adoption-level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of recommended harvesting practices. The study is expected to reveal that fish farmers with greater exposure to extension education may demonstrate higher levels of adoption of improved fish harvesting techniques. Extension education and practical demonstrations may improve farmers’ ability to determine suitable harvesting periods, use appropriate equipment, handle fish carefully, reduce physical damage, maintain hygiene, and prepare harvested fish for storage and marketing. However, inadequate harvesting equipment, limited extension contact, financial constraints, poor handling facilities, and insufficient technical information may continue to affect adoption. The study will be useful to fish farmers, agricultural extension agents, aquaculture specialists, farmer organisations, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, fish marketers, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension education programmes and improving farmers’ capacity to apply appropriate harvesting methods. The findings may also support efforts to reduce harvesting losses, maintain fish quality, improve market value, and increase the income and productivity of fish farmers. The study concludes that extension education is important for promoting fish farmers’ adoption of appropriate harvesting techniques and improving post-harvest management in aquaculture. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide regular practical training, demonstrations, and advisory services on improved fish harvesting techniques. Fish farmers should also be encouraged to participate actively in extension programmes and improve their access to suitable harvesting equipment, handling facilities, and technical information.
