Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Agricultural Volunteer Programme Participation

Abstract

Agricultural volunteer programmes provide opportunities for farmers and community members to participate in agricultural development activities, knowledge sharing, community mobilization, and extension-related initiatives. Such programmes can support the dissemination of agricultural information and encourage farmers to contribute to local agricultural development activities. However, farmers’ participation in volunteer programmes may be affected by limited awareness, inadequate information, lack of motivation, and insufficient understanding of the benefits of participation. Extension services can provide information, encouragement, and guidance that may improve farmers’ participation in agricultural volunteer programmes. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ participation in agricultural volunteer programmes. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services, determine their awareness of agricultural volunteer programmes, and examine the extent to which extension support influences their participation in such programmes. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of information provided to farmers concerning volunteer opportunities and agricultural community activities. The study will focus on extension services, agricultural volunteer programme participation, farmers’ awareness, extension contact, agricultural information dissemination, community participation, volunteer activities, farmer mobilization, agricultural knowledge sharing, community agricultural development, participation frequency, and farmers’ involvement in extension-related activities. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their level of exposure to extension services and their participation in agricultural volunteer programmes. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate participation assessment methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ participation in agricultural volunteer programmes. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may increase farmers’ awareness and participation in agricultural volunteer programmes. Farmers who receive regular extension information, community mobilization, practical guidance, and encouragement may demonstrate greater participation in volunteer activities related to agricultural information dissemination, farmer education, community projects, and agricultural development initiatives. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact contributes to improved understanding of the purpose and benefits of agricultural volunteer participation. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, community-based organizations, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for designing extension programmes that encourage greater farmer involvement in community-based agricultural activities. The findings may also assist extension personnel in identifying approaches for improving farmer mobilization, information sharing, and participation in agricultural volunteer initiatives. The study concludes that extension services can serve as an important means of creating awareness and encouraging farmers’ participation in agricultural volunteer programmes. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer mobilization, awareness campaigns, community meetings, and advisory activities that provide information on available agricultural volunteer opportunities. Extension personnel should also provide regular guidance and follow-up support to encourage sustained farmer participation in agricultural volunteer programmes.
