Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Animal Breeding Records

Abstract

Animal breeding records are important tools for effective livestock management because they provide information needed to monitor reproductive performance, identify superior animals, maintain accurate parentage information, and make informed breeding decisions. Proper breeding records may include mating dates, animal identification, parentage, birth dates, breeding history, reproductive outcomes, and offspring performance. Extension services can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical guidance required to understand and adopt appropriate breeding record management practices. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of animal breeding records. The study will assess the extent of farmers’ access to extension services and determine how such services influence their adoption of animal breeding records. It will examine farmers’ exposure to extension visits, training, demonstrations, advisory services, and educational materials relating to livestock breeding documentation. The study will also assess the extent to which farmers maintain records of mating activities, parentage, births, reproductive performance, breeding history, and offspring development. The study will focus on extension services, farmers, animal breeding records, livestock identification, mating records, parentage records, birth records, reproductive performance records, breeding history, offspring records, animal selection, breeding planning, livestock management, and farm documentation. Information will be obtained on farmers’ knowledge and application of recommended breeding record practices and the sources of information available to them. The study will also identify challenges such as inadequate extension contact, limited record-keeping skills, lack of simple recording materials, and limited awareness of the benefits of breeding records. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from livestock farmers through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on access to extension services and adoption of animal breeding records. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations. Inferential techniques such as correlation and regression analysis may also be used to determine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of animal breeding records. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of animal breeding records. Farmers who receive regular extension training, farm visits, demonstrations, and advisory information may be more likely to maintain accurate records of mating, parentage, births, reproductive performance, and offspring development. The study may also reveal that inadequate extension coverage, limited record-keeping materials, low technical knowledge, and difficulties in maintaining records could constrain farmers’ consistent adoption of breeding record practices. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock development agencies, animal production professionals, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders involved in livestock development. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes on livestock breeding documentation and improving farmers’ capacity to maintain useful breeding records. The findings may also assist relevant organisations in developing simple, affordable, and practical record-keeping systems suitable for different livestock production settings. The study concludes that extension services are important for improving farmers’ knowledge and adoption of animal breeding records. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and livestock development organisations should provide regular training, demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory services on breeding record management. Farmers should be encouraged to maintain accurate records of animal identification, mating, parentage, births, reproductive performance, and offspring development to support effective breeding decisions and improved livestock productivity.
