Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Integrated Farming Systems
Abstract
Integrated farming systems involve the coordinated combination of different agricultural enterprises, such as crop production, livestock production, fisheries, and other complementary activities, within a farming operation. These systems can promote efficient utilization of land, labour, water, crop residues, animal manure, and other available resources while supporting sustainable agricultural production. However, farmers require adequate knowledge, technical information, and practical guidance to understand and effectively implement integrated farming practices. Agricultural extension services therefore have an important role in providing farmers with relevant information and technical support. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of integrated farming systems. It will assess the extent to which extension services influence farmers’ awareness, knowledge, and application of integrated farming practices. The study will also examine the contribution of extension contact, advisory information, farmer training, field demonstrations, and technical assistance to farmers’ adoption of integrated farming systems. The study will focus on the frequency of extension contact, accessibility of extension agents, quality and relevance of advisory information, participation in extension training, demonstration activities, technical guidance, and agricultural information dissemination. Farmers’ adoption of crop-livestock integration, crop residue utilization, manure application, nutrient recycling, complementary farm enterprises, and other resource-sharing practices will also be assessed. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate farm assessment instruments. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Correlation and regression analysis may also be applied to determine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of integrated farming systems. The study is expected to reveal that access to effective extension services may increase farmers’ adoption of integrated farming systems. Farmers who receive regular extension contact, practical training, relevant advisory information, and field demonstrations may demonstrate greater knowledge and application of integrated farming practices. The findings may also show variations in adoption according to the type, frequency, accessibility, and usefulness of extension services received by farmers. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organisations, agricultural development programmes, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving extension programmes, strengthening farmer education, promoting integrated agricultural production, and designing advisory services that address farmers’ practical production needs. The study concludes that agricultural extension services can play an important role in supporting farmers’ adoption of integrated farming systems. It is therefore recommended that extension organisations strengthen regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training, and timely technical advisory services to improve farmers’ knowledge and encourage the effective adoption of integrated farming practices.
