Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Mushroom Fruiting Management

Abstract

Mushroom fruiting management is an important aspect of mushroom production because appropriate environmental and production conditions are required for the successful development and harvesting of mushroom fruiting bodies. Factors such as moisture, temperature, humidity, ventilation, light, substrate condition, and timely watering can influence fruiting performance. Farmers may experience difficulties in managing these conditions due to inadequate technical knowledge and limited access to reliable production information. Extension services can provide farmers with the knowledge and advisory support required to improve their mushroom fruiting management practices. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of mushroom fruiting management practices. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services, determine their knowledge of recommended fruiting management techniques, and examine the extent to which extension support influences their adoption of appropriate mushroom fruiting practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of advisory services received by mushroom farmers. The study will focus on extension services, mushroom fruiting management, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, humidity management, temperature control, ventilation, moisture management, watering practices, light management, fruiting-room preparation, contamination control, harvesting timing, and adoption of recommended fruiting practices. Information will be obtained from mushroom farmers to determine their level of exposure to extension services and how such exposure relates to their application of appropriate fruiting management techniques. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected mushroom farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of mushroom fruiting management practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended mushroom fruiting management practices. Farmers with regular access to extension advice, practical demonstrations, and technical guidance may demonstrate greater ability to manage moisture, humidity, temperature, ventilation, and other conditions required for successful fruiting. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact and practical advisory support contribute to better application of fruiting management practices. The study will be useful to mushroom farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, mushroom production organizations, researchers, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for improving extension programmes designed to support mushroom production and productivity. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical advisory programmes that address farmers’ specific challenges in managing mushroom fruiting conditions. The study concludes that extension services are an important source of technical information and support for improving farmers’ adoption of mushroom fruiting management practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, technical training, and follow-up advisory services for mushroom farmers. Extension programmes should emphasize appropriate moisture, humidity, temperature, ventilation, watering, and harvesting management to support effective mushroom fruiting and sustainable enterprise development.
