Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Mycotoxin Prevention Practices

Abstract

Mycotoxins are toxic substances produced by certain fungi that can contaminate agricultural products, particularly crops such as maize, groundnuts, cereals, and other stored food commodities. Their presence can reduce the quality and market value of agricultural produce and may create food safety concerns for consumers. Preventing mycotoxin contamination requires appropriate production, harvesting, drying, storage, and handling practices. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with information and practical guidance on measures for reducing the risk of mycotoxin contamination. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of mycotoxin prevention practices. It will assess how access to agricultural extension information influences farmers’ knowledge and application of recommended practices for preventing mycotoxin contamination. The study will also determine the extent to which farmers adopt appropriate prevention measures during crop production, harvesting, drying, storage, and marketing. The study will focus on extension services, mycotoxin awareness, crop harvesting practices, timely drying, moisture control, proper storage, sorting of damaged grains, storage hygiene, pest management, use of appropriate storage facilities, and produce handling practices. It will also examine farmers’ exposure to extension advice relating to mycotoxin prevention and the extent to which such information supports the adoption of recommended food safety practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ access to extension services and their adoption of mycotoxin prevention practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of mycotoxin prevention practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of mycotoxin prevention practices. Farmers who receive relevant extension information may demonstrate greater adoption of timely harvesting, proper drying, moisture control, sorting, hygienic storage, pest management, and appropriate produce handling practices. The findings may also indicate that regular extension contact improves farmers’ awareness of the conditions that encourage mycotoxin development and the measures required to reduce contamination. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, food safety agencies, agricultural cooperatives, produce marketers, government agricultural institutions, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that address mycotoxin prevention and food safety in agricultural production. The findings may also assist farmers in reducing postharvest losses, improving produce quality, protecting market value, and contributing to safer food production. The study concludes that extension services can play an important role in improving farmers’ adoption of mycotoxin prevention practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes provide practical training on mycotoxin risks, timely harvesting, proper drying, moisture management, sorting, pest control, and safe storage practices. Extension agents should also provide regular food safety information and demonstrations to encourage farmers to adopt effective measures for preventing mycotoxin contamination.
