Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Rabbit Housing Ventilation Practices

Abstract

Rabbit housing ventilation involves the provision and management of adequate air movement within rabbit housing facilities to maintain suitable temperature, humidity, air quality, and general environmental conditions. Proper ventilation is important for reducing heat stress, controlling excessive moisture and unpleasant odours, limiting the accumulation of harmful gases, and supporting the health and productivity of rabbits. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with technical information and practical guidance needed to adopt appropriate ventilation practices in rabbit housing. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of rabbit housing ventilation practices. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services related to rabbit housing management and determine how such services influence their adoption of recommended ventilation practices. It will also examine the role of extension agents in providing farmers with information and practical advice on maintaining suitable environmental conditions within rabbit housing facilities. The study will focus on extension contact, advisory visits, extension training, farmers’ knowledge of rabbit housing ventilation, housing design, ventilation openings, air circulation, temperature control, humidity management, prevention of overcrowding, removal of harmful gases, cleanliness, and general housing management. It will also consider farmers’ participation in practical demonstrations and other extension activities relating to rabbit housing and environmental management. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected rabbit farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their access to extension services and adoption of rabbit housing ventilation practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of recommended ventilation practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of rabbit housing ventilation practices. Farmers who receive regular extension information, training, demonstrations, and advisory visits may demonstrate greater adoption of appropriate ventilation openings, air circulation practices, temperature management, humidity control, and measures for maintaining good housing air quality. The study may also reveal that limited extension contact, inadequate technical knowledge, poor housing structures, financial constraints, and limited access to suitable materials can restrict farmers’ adoption of effective ventilation practices. The study will be useful to rabbit farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock development agencies, veterinary personnel, agricultural development organizations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information on the contribution of extension services to improved rabbit housing management and animal welfare. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in designing practical livestock extension programmes that strengthen farmers’ knowledge and skills for maintaining suitable housing environments and improving rabbit health and productivity.  The study concludes that extension services are important in promoting farmers’ adoption of rabbit housing ventilation practices because appropriate advisory support can improve farmers’ knowledge and practical housing management skills. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular training, farm visits, demonstrations, and advisory services on ventilation design, air circulation, temperature and humidity management, housing cleanliness, and overcrowding control to support healthy and productive rabbit farming.
