Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Turmeric Production Techniques

Abstract

Turmeric production provides opportunities for food production, income generation, employment creation, and agricultural enterprise diversification. The crop is valued for its culinary, medicinal, and commercial uses, making its production an important activity for farmers seeking to diversify their sources of income. However, effective turmeric production requires appropriate knowledge of land preparation, planting material selection, planting methods, soil fertility management, weed control, pest management, harvesting, and postharvest handling. Extension services can provide farmers with the technical information and advisory support required to improve their production practices. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of turmeric production techniques. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services, determine their level of knowledge of recommended turmeric production techniques, and examine the extent to which extension support influences their adoption of improved production practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of technical information provided to turmeric farmers. The study will focus on extension services, turmeric production techniques, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, land preparation, rhizome selection, seed treatment, planting methods, spacing, soil fertility management, weed management, pest and disease control, irrigation, harvesting, and postharvest handling. Information will be obtained from turmeric farmers to determine their exposure to extension services and the extent to which the information received is applied in their production activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected turmeric farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of turmeric production techniques. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended turmeric production techniques. Farmers who have regular access to extension agents, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory information may demonstrate greater adoption of improved planting, soil fertility management, weed control, pest management, harvesting, and postharvest practices. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact and timely technical information contribute to farmers’ effective application of recommended turmeric production techniques. The study will be useful to turmeric farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at promoting turmeric production and improving farmers’ technical capacity. The findings may also assist extension personnel in identifying specific production practices that require greater attention during farmer training and advisory activities. The study concludes that extension services are an important source of technical knowledge and support for improving farmers’ adoption of turmeric production techniques. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training, and follow-up advisory services for turmeric producers. Extension programmes should provide timely and practical information on improved planting materials, crop management, pest and weed control, harvesting, and postharvest handling to support sustainable turmeric production.
