Effect of Extension Services on Fish Farmers’ Adoption of Pond Preparation Techniques

Abstract

Pond preparation is an important aspect of fish farming because the condition of a pond before stocking can influence fish survival, growth, water quality, and overall production performance. Appropriate pond preparation practices such as pond cleaning, removal of unwanted organisms, liming, fertilization, water management, and inspection of pond structures help create suitable conditions for fish production. Extension services provide farmers with technical information and practical guidance on recommended pond preparation techniques. This study will examine the effect of extension services on fish farmers’ adoption of pond preparation techniques. The study will assess the extent of fish farmers’ access to extension services and determine how such services influence their adoption of recommended pond preparation techniques. It will examine farmers’ use of extension visits, training, demonstrations, advisory information, and other forms of technical assistance. The study will also assess the extent to which fish farmers apply recommended procedures for cleaning ponds, controlling unwanted organisms, managing pond water, applying lime and fertilizers, and preparing pond structures before stocking. The study will focus on extension services, fish farmers, pond preparation techniques, pond cleaning, pond drying, liming, pond fertilization, water management, weed control, predator control, pond structure maintenance, pond sanitation, and fish production. Information will be obtained on farmers’ exposure to different extension activities and their adoption of recommended pond preparation practices. The study will also consider challenges such as limited extension contact, inadequate technical information, lack of equipment, and financial constraints that may affect the adoption of appropriate pond preparation techniques. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from fish farmers through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on extension service access and adoption of pond preparation techniques. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations. Inferential techniques such as correlation and regression analysis may also be used to determine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of recommended pond preparation practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a positive effect on fish farmers’ adoption of pond preparation techniques. Farmers who have regular access to extension training, demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory information may demonstrate greater knowledge and adoption of recommended pond preparation practices. The study may also reveal that inadequate extension coverage, limited access to farm inputs and equipment, high preparation costs, and insufficient technical support may restrict farmers’ ability to consistently apply recommended techniques. The study will be useful to fish farmers, agricultural extension agents, fisheries development agencies, aquaculture organisations, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders involved in fish production. It may provide useful information for improving extension programmes and strengthening farmers’ technical knowledge of pond preparation. The findings may also assist relevant organisations in designing practical advisory programmes that address farmers’ specific pond management needs and promote improved aquaculture production. The study concludes that extension services are important for improving fish farmers’ knowledge and adoption of appropriate pond preparation techniques. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and fisheries development organisations should strengthen regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, training programmes, and advisory services on pond preparation. Extension activities should emphasise proper pond cleaning, drying, liming, fertilization, water management, and structural maintenance to encourage effective pond preparation and support sustainable fish production.
