Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Tool Inspection Practices
Abstract
Farm tools are essential for carrying out various agricultural activities, including land preparation, planting, weeding, harvesting, and postharvest operations. Regular inspection of farm tools is important for identifying defects, loose parts, damage, wear, and other conditions that may affect their safe and effective use. However, inadequate inspection practices may contribute to equipment failure, inefficient farm operations, and avoidable accidents. Extension training can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to properly inspect and maintain farm tools before and during their use. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of farm tool inspection practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training, determine their knowledge of recommended farm tool inspection procedures, and examine the extent to which training influences their adoption of regular inspection practices. It will also assess the frequency of training and the practical information provided to farmers concerning the safe and effective use of farm tools. The study will focus on extension training, farm tool inspection, farmers’ knowledge, training participation, tool condition assessment, identification of damaged parts, checking of handles and blades, inspection of joints and fasteners, tool cleanliness, detection of wear and defects, safe tool use, maintenance needs, and adoption of recommended inspection practices. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their level of exposure to extension training and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied during farm operations. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate observation checklists. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of farm tool inspection practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended farm tool inspection practices. Farmers who receive practical training and demonstrations may demonstrate greater attention to checking tool condition, identifying damaged or worn components, inspecting handles and fasteners, and determining when tools require repair or replacement. The study may also indicate that regular training and follow-up support contribute to more consistent inspection of farm tools before use. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, farm safety organizations, agricultural cooperatives, researchers, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for developing practical extension programmes that promote proper inspection and safe management of farm tools. The findings may also assist extension personnel in identifying common weaknesses in farmers’ tool inspection practices and developing appropriate training materials. The study concludes that extension training is an important source of technical knowledge for improving farmers’ adoption of farm tool inspection practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical training, demonstrations, and follow-up visits on farm tool inspection and safe tool management. Extension programmes should emphasize regular checking of tool condition, early identification of defects, proper cleaning, maintenance needs, and timely repair or replacement to promote safer and more efficient farm operations.
