Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Farmer-Led Experimentation

Abstract

Farmer-led experimentation is an approach through which farmers actively test, compare, adapt, and evaluate agricultural practices, technologies, and inputs under their own farming conditions. It enables farmers to generate practical knowledge based on their experiences and local circumstances while encouraging active participation in agricultural innovation. Extension training can provide farmers with the knowledge and skills needed to design simple experiments, observe results, compare alternatives, and make informed decisions about farming practices. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of farmer-led experimentation. It will assess the extent to which farmers receive training on experimentation practices and determine how such training influences their willingness and ability to conduct farm-based experiments. The study will also examine the nature, frequency, and content of extension training provided to farmers in relation to farmer-led experimentation. The study will focus on extension training relating to experiment planning, selection of farm practices for testing, comparison of agricultural inputs, observation of results, record keeping, evaluation of outcomes, and decision-making based on experimental evidence. Farmers’ adoption of farmer-led experimentation will be assessed based on their participation in farm trials, testing of alternative practices, comparison of technologies, documentation of results, and continued use of experimentation in farm management. Extension demonstrations, field visits, practical training, and farmer group activities will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and relevant farm records where available. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize farmers’ exposure to extension training and adoption of farmer-led experimentation. Correlation and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of farmer-led experimentation. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of farmer-led experimentation. Farmers who receive practical training and continuous guidance may be more likely to conduct simple farm trials, compare alternative production practices, evaluate results, and use their findings in making farm management decisions. The study may also reveal that practical demonstrations and participatory training approaches can improve farmers’ confidence and skills in conducting experiments under their own farming conditions. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, research institutions, agricultural development agencies, farmer organizations, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote farmer participation in agricultural research and innovation. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing training programmes that encourage farmers to test and adapt agricultural technologies according to their local conditions and production needs. The study concludes that extension training is an important factor in promoting farmers’ adoption of farmer-led experimentation and strengthening participatory approaches to agricultural innovation. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide practical and participatory training on simple experimental methods, observation, record keeping, and evaluation of farm results. Extension agents should also provide continuous technical support and collaborate with farmers and research institutions to encourage effective farmer-led experimentation.
