Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Moringa Leaf Harvesting Practices

Abstract

Moringa production is an important agricultural activity that provides opportunities for food production, income generation, nutrition improvement, and agricultural enterprise diversification. Moringa leaves are widely valued for their nutritional and commercial uses, making proper harvesting practices important for maintaining leaf quality and supporting continuous plant growth. However, inappropriate harvesting methods, timing, and handling may reduce leaf quality and affect subsequent plant development. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills required to adopt appropriate moringa leaf harvesting practices. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of moringa leaf harvesting practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training, determine their knowledge of recommended leaf harvesting practices, and examine the extent to which training influences their adoption of appropriate harvesting techniques. It will also assess the frequency of training and the practical information provided to farmers on harvesting, handling, and preservation of moringa leaves. The study will focus on extension training, moringa leaf harvesting practices, farmers’ knowledge, training participation, harvesting timing, leaf selection, cutting methods, harvesting frequency, plant protection, hygienic handling, sorting, cleaning, packaging, and postharvest management. Information will be obtained from moringa farmers to determine their exposure to extension training and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied during leaf harvesting activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected moringa farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of moringa leaf harvesting practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended moringa leaf harvesting practices. Farmers who participate in practical training, demonstrations, and advisory sessions may demonstrate greater use of appropriate harvesting timing, cutting methods, harvesting frequency, hygienic handling, sorting, and packaging practices. The study may also indicate that regular training and follow-up support contribute to better application of recommended harvesting practices and improved management of harvested moringa leaves. The study will be useful to moringa farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at improving moringa leaf harvesting and postharvest management. The findings may also assist extension personnel in designing practical training programmes that address farmers’ specific harvesting and handling challenges. The study concludes that extension training is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of appropriate moringa leaf harvesting practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farmer training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services for moringa producers. Extension programmes should emphasize proper harvesting timing, cutting techniques, hygienic handling, sorting, packaging, and postharvest management to support quality moringa leaf production and sustainable farm income.
