Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Mushroom Enterprise Hygiene

Abstract

Mushroom enterprise hygiene is an important aspect of mushroom production because cleanliness and proper sanitation help reduce contamination and support the production of safe and quality mushrooms. Poor hygiene practices during substrate preparation, spawning, cultivation, harvesting, and storage may increase the risk of contamination and production losses. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills required to maintain appropriate hygiene standards throughout mushroom production activities. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of mushroom enterprise hygiene practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training on mushroom hygiene, determine their level of knowledge of recommended hygiene practices, and examine the extent to which training influences their adoption of appropriate sanitation measures. It will also assess farmers’ application of hygiene practices during different stages of mushroom production. The study will focus on extension training, mushroom enterprise hygiene, farmers’ knowledge, sanitation practices, personal hygiene, equipment cleanliness, substrate handling, growing-room sanitation, contamination prevention, harvesting hygiene, packaging hygiene, storage cleanliness, waste disposal, and adoption of recommended hygiene practices. Information will be obtained from mushroom farmers to determine their exposure to extension training and the extent to which the knowledge gained is applied in their mushroom enterprises. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected mushroom farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate observation checklists. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of mushroom enterprise hygiene practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended mushroom enterprise hygiene practices. Farmers who receive practical training and regular technical guidance may demonstrate better application of personal hygiene, equipment sanitation, growing-area cleanliness, proper waste disposal, and contamination prevention measures. The study may also indicate that the frequency and practical nature of extension training influence farmers’ ability to maintain appropriate hygiene standards. The study will be useful to mushroom farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, mushroom production organizations, researchers, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for developing practical extension programmes aimed at improving hygiene management in mushroom enterprises. The findings may also assist extension personnel in identifying specific hygiene practices that require greater attention during farmer training and advisory activities. The study concludes that extension training is an important source of technical knowledge for improving farmers’ adoption of appropriate hygiene practices in mushroom enterprises. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide regular and practical training on mushroom hygiene, including sanitation, contamination prevention, equipment cleaning, harvesting hygiene, and proper waste management. Extension agents should also conduct follow-up visits to encourage farmers to consistently apply recommended hygiene practices in their mushroom enterprises.
