Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Participatory Seed Multiplication

Abstract

Participatory seed multiplication involves the active involvement of farmers in the production, selection, maintenance, and multiplication of quality planting materials within farming communities. This approach can improve farmers’ access to suitable seeds, strengthen local seed systems, preserve desirable crop varieties, and encourage collective participation in seed production activities. Extension training can provide farmers with the technical knowledge and practical skills required to adopt appropriate participatory seed multiplication practices. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of participatory seed multiplication. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training on seed multiplication, determine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended participatory seed multiplication practices, and examine how training influences farmers’ involvement in the production and maintenance of quality planting materials. The study will focus on extension training, seed selection, field preparation, planting material multiplication, varietal maintenance, isolation practices, rouging, crop monitoring, harvesting, seed processing, drying, storage, quality control, record keeping, and farmer participation. It will also examine farmers’ adoption of collective seed production practices and their involvement in community-based seed multiplication activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires to assess their exposure to extension training and adoption of participatory seed multiplication practices. The data will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of participatory seed multiplication practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of participatory seed multiplication practices. Farmers who receive relevant training may demonstrate greater adoption of practices such as seed selection, field preparation, varietal maintenance, isolation, rouging, crop monitoring, harvesting, processing, storage, and quality control. The study may also identify specific seed multiplication practices where farmers require additional training and technical support. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, seed producers, community seed organisations, agricultural research institutions, government agricultural agencies, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for developing extension training programmes that strengthen farmer participation in community-based seed multiplication. The findings may also assist farmers in improving access to quality planting materials, maintaining locally adapted varieties, reducing seed shortages, and strengthening local seed production systems. The study concludes that extension training can provide important knowledge and practical skills for improving farmers’ adoption of participatory seed multiplication practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes provide practical training on seed selection, field management, varietal maintenance, isolation, rouging, harvesting, processing, storage, quality control, and record keeping to strengthen farmers’ capacity to participate effectively in seed multiplication activities.
