Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Produce Cooling Practices
Abstract
Produce cooling practices are important postharvest management measures for maintaining the freshness, quality, and market value of agricultural products. Fresh fruits and vegetables can deteriorate rapidly when exposed to high temperatures after harvest, resulting in moisture loss, wilting, spoilage, reduced shelf life, and financial losses for farmers. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge on appropriate cooling methods and help them adopt improved practices for preserving fresh produce after harvest. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of produce cooling practices. It will assess the extent to which extension training improves farmers’ knowledge and use of recommended cooling practices for fresh agricultural produce. The study will also determine the influence of training on farmers’ adoption of practices such as shade cooling, evaporative cooling, pre-cooling, use of appropriate cooling containers, timely movement of harvested produce, and other suitable methods of reducing produce temperature after harvest. The study will focus on extension training, farmers’ knowledge of produce cooling, postharvest handling, cooling methods, temperature management, fresh produce preservation, shelf-life extension, produce quality, postharvest loss reduction, storage practices, and adoption of recommended cooling techniques. It will also assess farmers’ sources of information on produce cooling and determine the extent to which extension agents provide practical demonstrations and advisory support on appropriate cooling methods. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training, knowledge of produce cooling practices, and level of adoption of recommended cooling techniques. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of produce cooling practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of produce cooling practices. Farmers who receive regular and practical training may demonstrate greater knowledge and use of appropriate cooling methods, timely cooling after harvest, protection of produce from excessive heat, and suitable storage and transportation practices. The level of adoption may also vary according to farmers’ access to cooling facilities, extension contact, type of produce handled, and availability of appropriate cooling materials. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, postharvest specialists, produce marketers, agricultural cooperatives, agricultural development agencies, food supply organisations, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that address postharvest losses and improve the quality of fresh agricultural produce. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in developing practical training and demonstrations that promote affordable and effective cooling practices among farmers. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to improved adoption of produce cooling practices by increasing farmers’ knowledge and practical skills in postharvest temperature management. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide regular practical training on appropriate cooling methods, rapid postharvest cooling, produce handling, storage, and transportation. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt suitable and affordable cooling technologies to reduce postharvest losses, maintain produce quality, and improve their returns from agricultural production.
