Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Reusable Produce Crate Systems

Abstract

Reusable produce crate systems are important postharvest handling technologies that can help reduce physical damage, contamination, and quality deterioration of agricultural produce during harvesting, transportation, storage, and marketing. Unlike some traditional packaging materials, reusable crates can provide better protection and may be used repeatedly, potentially reducing packaging-related losses and waste. However, farmers may have limited knowledge of appropriate crate selection, handling, cleaning, stacking, and maintenance practices. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills required for the effective adoption and management of reusable produce crate systems. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of reusable produce crate systems. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training, determine their knowledge of reusable produce crate systems, and examine the extent to which training influences their adoption of appropriate crate handling and management practices. It will also assess farmers’ participation in practical demonstrations and advisory programmes relating to improved produce packaging and transportation. The study will focus on extension training, reusable produce crate systems, farmers’ adoption, postharvest handling, crate selection, produce loading, stacking practices, crate cleaning, sanitation, maintenance, transportation, storage, handling of fresh produce, packaging practices, and postharvest loss management. Information will be obtained from farmers involved in the production and marketing of perishable agricultural produce to determine their exposure to extension training and their application of recommended reusable crate practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of reusable produce crate systems. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of reusable produce crate systems. Farmers who receive practical training, demonstrations, and regular technical guidance may demonstrate greater use of appropriate crate selection, loading, stacking, cleaning, sanitation, maintenance, and transportation practices. The study may also indicate that practical training and follow-up extension support contribute to improved handling of agricultural produce and reduced physical damage during postharvest operations. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, produce marketers, cooperatives, postharvest management organizations, researchers, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes on improved packaging and postharvest handling technologies. The findings may also assist stakeholders in promoting appropriate reusable crate systems as part of efforts to improve produce quality, reduce postharvest losses, and support efficient agricultural marketing. The study concludes that extension training is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of reusable produce crate systems. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical training, demonstrations, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services on crate selection, loading, stacking, cleaning, sanitation, maintenance, and transportation. Greater access to appropriate reusable crates and relevant technical information may further support improved postharvest handling and reduce losses of agricultural produce.
