Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Small-Scale Water Harvesting Structures

Abstract

Small-scale water harvesting structures are important agricultural water management facilities that help farmers collect, store, and conserve water for crop and livestock production. These structures can improve access to water during periods of inadequate rainfall, reduce surface runoff, support soil moisture conservation, and strengthen farm resilience to water shortages. Extension training can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to understand, construct, maintain, and use appropriate small-scale water harvesting structures. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of small-scale water harvesting structures. The study will assess the extent to which farmers adopt recommended water harvesting structures and determine how exposure to extension training influences their adoption. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of water harvesting practices and identify areas where additional technical training and advisory support are required. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of structures such as farm ponds, small storage tanks, water collection pits, contour bunds, infiltration trenches, runoff collection channels, and other appropriate small-scale water harvesting facilities. It will also consider farmers’ practices relating to site selection, construction, maintenance, water storage, runoff management, and safe utilization of harvested water for agricultural activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to extension training and adoption of small-scale water harvesting structures. The collected data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations to determine adoption levels, while correlation and regression analyses will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of water harvesting structures. The study is expected to reveal variations in farmers’ adoption of small-scale water harvesting structures based on their exposure to extension training. Farmers who receive practical demonstrations, farm visits, training programmes, and technical guidance may demonstrate greater adoption of appropriate water harvesting structures than farmers with limited training exposure. The study may also identify challenges such as construction costs, limited technical knowledge, inadequate labour, lack of suitable materials, land limitations, and insufficient extension support. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, irrigation development agencies, agricultural development programmes, water resource authorities, farmers’ associations, policymakers, researchers, and organisations involved in sustainable water management. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote small-scale water harvesting and improve farmers’ capacity to manage agricultural water resources. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to improved adoption of small-scale water harvesting structures and support more effective management of agricultural water resources. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical training through demonstrations, field-based construction exercises, farm visits, and educational materials on appropriate water harvesting structures. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt suitable structures, maintain them properly, and use harvested water efficiently to support crop production and improve resilience to water shortages.
