Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Split Fertilizer Application
Abstract
Split fertilizer application is an important crop management practice that involves applying fertilizer in two or more portions at different stages of crop growth rather than applying the entire quantity at once. The practice can improve nutrient availability, reduce nutrient losses, enhance fertilizer-use efficiency, and support better crop growth. Extension training can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to understand the appropriate timing, quantity, and methods for applying fertilizer in split doses. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of split fertilizer application. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine how training influences their adoption of recommended split fertilizer application practices. The study will also examine the extent to which farmers apply the knowledge gained through extension training in their crop production activities. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of fertilizer application timing, appropriate fertilizer types, recommended application rates, methods of fertilizer placement, crop growth stages, frequency of application, and management of fertilizer after application. Attention will also be given to extension training activities such as practical demonstrations, field days, farmer group meetings, workshops, farm visits, and technical advisory sessions. These activities may improve farmers’ ability to apply fertilizers at appropriate stages and in suitable quantities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and adoption assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while adoption scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of split fertilizer application. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular extension training may demonstrate higher adoption of split fertilizer application practices than farmers with limited training exposure. Training may improve farmers’ understanding of appropriate application timing, fertilizer rates, placement methods, and crop nutrient requirements. However, limited access to extension agents, inadequate fertilizer availability, high input costs, insufficient practical demonstrations, and farmers’ traditional fertilizer practices may constrain effective adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, fertilizer suppliers, agricultural development agencies, researchers, government institutions, and non-governmental organizations. It may provide useful information on the contribution of extension training to improved fertilizer management and identify areas where farmers require additional technical support. The findings may also assist extension organizations in designing practical training programmes that encourage efficient fertilizer application and improved crop production. The study concludes that extension training can play an important role in improving farmers’ adoption of split fertilizer application practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical training, organize field demonstrations on fertilizer application timing and methods, provide clear information on recommended fertilizer rates, and increase extension contact with farmers. These measures can promote efficient fertilizer use, reduce nutrient losses, improve crop performance, and support sustainable agricultural production.
