Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Water-Quality Protection Measures

Abstract

Water-quality protection measures involve agricultural practices aimed at preventing the contamination and degradation of surface water and groundwater used for farming and other domestic purposes. Appropriate protection measures are important for reducing pollution from fertilizers, pesticides, animal waste, soil sediments, and other agricultural activities. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills on appropriate farming practices that protect water resources while supporting sustainable agricultural production. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of water-quality protection measures. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training on water-quality management and determine how such training influences their adoption of recommended practices for protecting agricultural water sources. It will also examine the extent to which farmers apply knowledge obtained through extension training in their daily farming activities. The study will focus on extension training, farmers’ knowledge of water-quality protection, fertilizer management, pesticide application practices, proper disposal of agricultural waste, protection of water sources, prevention of soil erosion and sedimentation, maintenance of buffer areas, and safe management of livestock and farm waste. It will also consider farmers’ participation in practical demonstrations and other extension activities relating to the protection and sustainable use of agricultural water resources. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training and adoption of water-quality protection measures. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of recommended water-quality protection practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of water-quality protection measures. Farmers who receive regular and practical training may demonstrate greater knowledge and adoption of appropriate fertilizer application, pesticide handling, waste disposal, erosion control, and water-source protection practices. The study may also reveal that inadequate training opportunities, limited access to extension personnel, lack of appropriate resources, and poor awareness of water pollution risks can constrain farmers’ adoption of water-quality protection measures. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, water-resource management authorities, agricultural development agencies, environmental organizations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information on the role of extension training in promoting responsible agricultural practices that protect water resources. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in developing farmer-oriented training programmes that integrate water-quality protection into agricultural extension activities and sustainable farm management. The study concludes that extension training is an important component of promoting farmers’ adoption of water-quality protection measures because practical agricultural education can improve farmers’ knowledge and application of environmentally responsible farming practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular training and demonstrations on water-quality protection, safe use of farm inputs, waste management, erosion control, and protection of water sources to encourage sustainable agricultural production and preserve water resources.
