Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Knowledge of Efficient Farm Work Scheduling
Abstract
Efficient farm work scheduling is an important aspect of farm management because it enables farmers to organise production activities according to available labour, time, equipment, and seasonal requirements. Proper scheduling can support timely land preparation, planting, weeding, input application, harvesting, and other farm operations. However, inadequate knowledge of work scheduling may result in delays, poor labour utilisation, inefficient use of farm resources, and increased production costs. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills needed to plan and organise farm work more efficiently. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ knowledge of efficient farm work scheduling. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine their level of knowledge of recommended farm work scheduling practices. The study will also examine the relationship between participation in extension training and farmers’ knowledge of efficient farm work scheduling. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of identifying major farm activities, determining appropriate timing for farm operations, sequencing production activities, allocating labour, planning the use of farm equipment, coordinating family and hired labour, scheduling input application, organising harvesting activities, and adjusting farm activities to seasonal conditions. It will also consider farmers’ participation in practical training, demonstrations, extension meetings, advisory visits, and access to farm management information. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training and knowledge of efficient farm work scheduling. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, knowledge-level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ knowledge of efficient farm work scheduling. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular and practical extension training may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of efficient farm work scheduling. Training, demonstrations, and advisory support may improve farmers’ understanding of activity sequencing, labour allocation, timing of farm operations, equipment use, and seasonal planning. The study may also identify challenges such as inadequate extension contact, limited training opportunities, unpredictable weather conditions, labour shortages, and insufficient farm management information. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, farm management specialists, farmer organisations, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, and research institutions. It may provide useful information on farmers’ knowledge needs relating to farm work scheduling and assist in strengthening agricultural extension programmes. The findings may also support the development of simple and practical scheduling tools that farmers can use to organise their farm activities and resources. The study concludes that extension training is important for improving farmers’ knowledge of efficient farm work scheduling and strengthening farm management. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide practical training, demonstrations, farm planning exercises, and advisory services on effective scheduling of farm activities. Farmers should also be encouraged to develop simple work schedules that account for labour availability, seasonal conditions, equipment requirements, and critical production periods to improve timely farm operations and overall farm productivity.
