Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Knowledge of Farm Biosecurity Measures

Abstract

Farm biosecurity measures are practices designed to prevent the introduction, spread, and transmission of pests, diseases, and other biological hazards within farms and between agricultural holdings. Effective biosecurity is important for protecting crops, livestock, farm workers, and agricultural productivity. Measures such as sanitation, controlled farm access, proper disposal of farm waste, equipment hygiene, isolation of new animals, and safe movement of farm materials can reduce exposure to biological risks. Extension training can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to understand and implement appropriate farm biosecurity measures. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ knowledge of farm biosecurity measures. It will assess the extent to which training, demonstrations, farm visits, and technical guidance improve farmers’ understanding of biosecurity practices. The study will also determine farmers’ knowledge of the importance of biosecurity and the appropriate measures required to prevent and control biological hazards on farms. The study will focus on extension training activities such as farmer education, practical demonstrations, workshops, farm visits, group discussions, and distribution of technical information on biosecurity. It will examine farmers’ knowledge of farm sanitation, equipment disinfection, controlled farm access, quarantine and isolation procedures, safe animal movement, pest control, waste disposal, water hygiene, feed hygiene, personal protective practices, and reporting of suspected disease or pest outbreaks. Attention will also be given to farmers’ understanding of the benefits of maintaining good biosecurity practices for protecting farm productivity. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to extension training and their knowledge of farm biosecurity measures. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ knowledge of farm biosecurity. Where applicable, farmers’ knowledge levels before and after exposure to training will also be compared. The study is expected to reveal that extension training has a positive effect on farmers’ knowledge of farm biosecurity measures. Farmers who receive regular training, practical demonstrations, and technical guidance may demonstrate better knowledge of sanitation, quarantine, equipment hygiene, farm access control, waste management, and disease or pest reporting procedures. However, limited training opportunities, inadequate extension contact, lack of biosecurity materials, financial constraints, and limited understanding of technical procedures may restrict farmers’ knowledge and application of recommended biosecurity measures. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock and crop production agencies, veterinary and agricultural authorities, farmer organizations, research institutions, policymakers, and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector. The findings may assist extension personnel in designing practical training programmes that improve farmers’ understanding of farm biosecurity and encourage the adoption of preventive practices. Improved knowledge may contribute to better farm health management, reduced biological risks, and improved agricultural productivity. The study concludes that extension training is an important avenue for improving farmers’ knowledge of farm biosecurity measures. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen biosecurity education through practical demonstrations, field visits, workshops, simplified technical materials, and continuous advisory support. Collaboration among extension agencies, veterinary and agricultural authorities, research institutions, farmer organizations, and other relevant stakeholders should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ access to accurate biosecurity information and technical guidance.
