Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Participation in Agricultural Innovation Exhibitions

Abstract

Agricultural innovation exhibitions provide opportunities for farmers to observe, display, and exchange information about new agricultural technologies, practices, products, and locally developed innovations. Such exhibitions can facilitate interaction among farmers, extension agents, researchers, technology providers, and other agricultural stakeholders. Extension training can help farmers understand the purpose and benefits of these events, identify relevant innovations, and develop the knowledge and confidence needed to participate effectively. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ participation in agricultural innovation exhibitions. It will assess the extent to which farmers receive training and information concerning agricultural innovation exhibitions and determine how such training influences their participation. The study will also examine the nature, frequency, and content of extension training provided to farmers in relation to agricultural innovation events. The study will focus on extension training involving agricultural technology awareness, innovation identification, exhibition preparation, product presentation, practical demonstrations, information sharing, and participation procedures. Farmers’ participation will be assessed based on awareness of exhibitions, attendance, registration, display of innovations, interaction with other participants, observation of new technologies, and participation in knowledge-sharing activities. Farmers’ access to extension agents, training opportunities, farmer organizations, and information about exhibition events will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and relevant participation records where available. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize farmers’ exposure to extension training and participation in agricultural innovation exhibitions. Correlation and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ participation in agricultural innovation exhibitions. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may have a positive effect on farmers’ participation in agricultural innovation exhibitions. Farmers who receive regular and practical training may demonstrate greater awareness of exhibition opportunities and participate more actively than farmers with limited training exposure. The study may also reveal that training can improve farmers’ understanding of exhibition procedures, increase their confidence in presenting innovations, and encourage interaction with researchers, extension personnel, and other farmers. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, research institutions, agricultural development agencies, innovation organizations, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote farmer participation in agricultural innovation events. The findings may also assist exhibition organizers and agricultural agencies in developing effective training and communication strategies that encourage wider participation and improve farmers’ access to emerging agricultural technologies. The study concludes that extension training is an important factor in promoting farmers’ participation in agricultural innovation exhibitions and improving their exposure to new agricultural knowledge and technologies. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide regular information, practical training, and preparatory guidance to farmers before innovation exhibitions. Extension programmes should also encourage farmers to present their indigenous and improved innovations at exhibitions to promote knowledge exchange and wider dissemination of useful agricultural practices.
