Assessment of Geometric Forms in Contemporary Nigerian Architecture

Abstract

Geometric form is a fundamental component of architectural expression and spatial organization, influencing the visual identity, functionality, environmental performance, and cultural character of buildings. Contemporary Nigerian architecture increasingly incorporates diverse geometric forms ranging from simple rectilinear configurations to curved, angular, modular, and sculptural compositions. These forms respond to changing architectural preferences, technological developments, climatic conditions, and evolving interpretations of Nigerian architectural identity. Assessing geometric forms is therefore important for understanding their role in contemporary architectural practice. This study assesses the geometric forms employed in contemporary Nigerian architecture by examining their characteristics, composition, proportions, and spatial implications. It considers forms such as rectangular, square, circular, triangular, curved, angular, fragmented, and combined geometries and evaluates how they are incorporated into building masses and floor plans. Attention is given to the relationship between geometric form and functional organization, including how form influences spatial arrangement, circulation, structural systems, and building envelope configuration. The research further examines the influence of geometric forms on environmental performance in the Nigerian context. Building form can affect solar exposure, natural ventilation, daylight penetration, surface-to-volume relationships, and thermal behaviour. The study considers how different geometric configurations respond to Nigeria's varied climatic conditions and whether contemporary formal approaches incorporate climate-responsive principles. The relationship between building geometry, orientation, shading, roof form, and external envelope design is also considered. In addition to functional and environmental considerations, the study examines the cultural and aesthetic dimensions of geometric forms. Contemporary Nigerian architecture often negotiates between international architectural influences, local cultural expressions, available construction technologies, and regional identities. The use of geometric patterns, proportions, spatial compositions, and façade elements is therefore assessed in relation to architectural identity and contextual expression. The study considers how contemporary forms can respond to local cultural and environmental conditions without relying solely on traditional architectural imagery. Challenges associated with the use of complex geometric forms may include increased construction costs, structural complexity, material wastage, maintenance requirements, and difficulties in achieving appropriate environmental performance. Highly expressive forms may also create conflicts between aesthetic objectives and functional requirements if not carefully integrated into the design process. Understanding these challenges can support more balanced architectural approaches that combine formal innovation with constructability, environmental responsiveness, functional efficiency, and contextual relevance. The study aims to evaluate the characteristics and implications of geometric forms in contemporary Nigerian architecture and identify design considerations that support effective integration of form, function, environment, and context. Its findings are expected to assist architects and architectural researchers in understanding how geometric expression can contribute to contemporary Nigerian building design. The study contributes to the discourse on contemporary Nigerian architecture by highlighting the importance of geometric form as a tool for architectural identity, spatial organization, environmental responsiveness, and design innovation.
