Assessment of Green Building Practices in Contemporary Nigerian Architecture
Abstract
The increasing effects of climate change, rapid urbanization, population growth, and rising energy demand have created a need for more sustainable approaches to building design and construction in Nigeria. The building sector contributes significantly to energy consumption, resource use, waste generation, and environmental impacts. Green building practices provide an approach to addressing these challenges by promoting energy efficiency, responsible material selection, water conservation, waste reduction, and improved indoor environmental quality. The integration of these practices into contemporary Nigerian architecture can contribute to more sustainable and environmentally responsive buildings. This study assesses the adoption of green building practices in contemporary Nigerian architecture. Green building practices involve the incorporation of environmentally responsible strategies throughout the planning, design, construction, and operation of buildings. These practices may include passive design, natural ventilation, daylighting, renewable energy systems, energy-efficient equipment, sustainable building materials, water conservation systems, and appropriate waste management. Their application can improve building performance while reducing negative environmental impacts and operating costs. Climate-responsive design is particularly important in the Nigerian context because of the country's diverse climatic conditions. Strategies such as appropriate building orientation, natural ventilation, solar shading, courtyards, vegetation, and suitable building materials can help reduce heat gain and improve indoor thermal comfort. The effective use of these passive strategies can also reduce dependence on mechanical cooling and artificial lighting. Consequently, integrating traditional climatic responses with contemporary architectural technologies can support the development of buildings that are better adapted to local environmental conditions. The selection and use of sustainable materials also form an important component of green building practice. Locally available and environmentally responsible materials can potentially reduce transportation impacts, construction waste, and embodied energy. The incorporation of renewable energy technologies, particularly solar energy, can provide alternative sources of electricity and reduce dependence on conventional energy systems. Similarly, water-efficient fixtures, rainwater harvesting, and appropriate waste management systems can improve resource efficiency in buildings. Despite the potential benefits of green building practices, their adoption in Nigeria may be influenced by several factors, including initial construction costs, limited technical expertise, lack of awareness, availability of sustainable materials and technologies, regulatory challenges, and inadequate enforcement of relevant building standards. These factors can affect the extent to which architects, developers, contractors, and building owners incorporate sustainable practices into contemporary projects. Assessing the current application of these practices is therefore important for identifying opportunities and challenges associated with sustainable architectural development in Nigeria. This study assesses selected green building practices used in contemporary Nigerian architecture and examines their contribution to environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, resource conservation, and occupant comfort. The study is expected to identify commonly adopted practices, their perceived benefits, and the major challenges affecting their implementation. The findings will provide useful information for architects, engineers, developers, policymakers, and other stakeholders seeking to promote sustainable building development in Nigeria. The study may also contribute to the advancement of climate-responsive and environmentally responsible architectural practices within the Nigerian built environment.
