Assessment of Multipurpose Spaces in Community Buildings

Abstract

Multipurpose spaces are important components of community buildings because they allow a single architectural environment to accommodate diverse activities, user groups, and community needs. Such spaces may support meetings, training programmes, cultural activities, social gatherings, workshops, recreation, and public events at different times. Effective multipurpose planning can improve space utilization and reduce the need for numerous specialized rooms. However, poorly designed spaces may experience conflicts between activities, inadequate flexibility, poor circulation, and limited user comfort, making their assessment essential for effective community building design. This study assesses the planning and performance of multipurpose spaces in community buildings by examining their size, configuration, accessibility, spatial relationships, and adaptability. Factors such as room proportions, entrances, circulation routes, furniture arrangements, storage facilities, service areas, and connections to supporting spaces are considered. The assessment evaluates whether these spaces can accommodate different activities without significant modifications or disruption. Attention is also given to the relationship between multipurpose spaces and other community facilities. The research further examines the role of flexibility in supporting multiple activities. Movable partitions, flexible furniture, retractable seating, accessible storage, adaptable lighting, and appropriately positioned service points can allow spaces to change according to different functional requirements. The study considers how easily multipurpose spaces can be reconfigured and whether their physical characteristics support simultaneous or sequential activities. The ability to accommodate different group sizes is also considered as an important aspect of functional flexibility. In addition to flexibility, the study evaluates environmental and user-related factors that influence the performance of multipurpose spaces. Natural lighting, ventilation, thermal comfort, acoustic conditions, visual accessibility, and spatial proportions can affect the suitability of a space for different community activities. Accessibility for elderly persons, children, and persons with disabilities is also considered. These factors are examined to determine how effectively multipurpose spaces provide inclusive and comfortable environments for diverse users. Challenges affecting multipurpose spaces may include inadequate storage, insufficient circulation areas, poor acoustic control, limited natural ventilation, unsuitable furniture, and conflicts between activities requiring different spatial conditions. Frequent changes in furniture and equipment may also increase maintenance requirements. Identifying these challenges can help improve the planning and management of multipurpose spaces while ensuring that flexibility does not compromise safety, comfort, accessibility, or functional efficiency. The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of multipurpose spaces in community buildings and identify design characteristics that support flexibility, accessibility, comfort, and efficient space utilization. Its findings are expected to assist architects, community planners, and facility managers in developing adaptable spaces capable of responding to changing community needs. The study contributes to socially responsive architectural design by emphasizing multipurpose planning as a strategy for maximizing building utility, supporting diverse activities, and strengthening the functional role of community facilities.
