Assessment of Organic and Rectilinear Forms in Contemporary Architecture

Abstract

Contemporary architecture incorporates a wide range of formal approaches, with organic and rectilinear forms representing two distinctive strategies for shaping buildings and their spatial identities. Organic forms are characterized by curved, fluid, irregular, and nature-inspired geometries, while rectilinear forms rely on straight lines, angular configurations, grids, and clearly defined geometric relationships. The selection and combination of these forms influence architectural expression, spatial organization, visual perception, and the relationship between buildings and their surrounding environments. This study assesses the use of organic and rectilinear forms in contemporary architecture, focusing on their characteristics, applications, and contributions to building design. It examines how architects employ curved and fluid geometries alongside linear and angular forms to establish visual identity and spatial hierarchy. Attention is given to the proportions, scales, geometrical relationships, and compositional principles that distinguish the two approaches across contemporary buildings. The study further investigates how organic and rectilinear forms influence interior spatial organization and external building composition. Organic forms may create flowing circulation patterns, dynamic spaces, and continuous visual connections, while rectilinear forms can support efficient planning, modular coordination, and straightforward spatial zoning. The integration of both approaches is also considered, particularly where curved elements are introduced within predominantly orthogonal building systems or where rectilinear components provide structure to organically shaped spaces. Environmental and functional considerations are examined in relation to the selection of building forms. The study considers how geometric configurations influence daylight penetration, natural ventilation, solar exposure, structural requirements, material use, and building efficiency. Site conditions, climate, surrounding development, construction technology, and building function are also considered as factors that can influence the suitability and performance of organic and rectilinear architectural forms. The application of organic and rectilinear forms can present challenges involving construction complexity, structural coordination, material selection, cost, maintenance, and functional efficiency. Highly organic geometries may require specialized construction techniques and customized components, whereas rigid rectilinear configurations may offer greater construction simplicity but potentially limit formal flexibility. Understanding these differences is important for achieving a balance between architectural expression, practicality, environmental responsiveness, and functional requirements. The study aims to provide a clearer understanding of the design implications of organic and rectilinear forms in contemporary architecture. It is expected to identify the strengths, limitations, and appropriate applications of both formal approaches while examining opportunities for their complementary use. The findings can support architects and designers in selecting and integrating geometric forms that enhance architectural identity, spatial quality, environmental performance, and contextual responsiveness.
