Assessment of Passive Design Strategies in Hot-Climate Buildings
Abstract
Passive design strategies are important for improving building performance in hot climates, where high temperatures and intense solar radiation can create significant challenges for indoor thermal comfort and energy consumption. Buildings that rely heavily on mechanical cooling may experience increased operational costs and energy demand. Passive design provides an alternative approach by using architectural form, orientation, materials, openings, shading, and natural ventilation to moderate indoor environmental conditions. This study assesses passive design strategies in hot-climate buildings, focusing on architectural features that can reduce heat gain and improve indoor comfort. Strategies considered include building orientation, compact or appropriate building forms, natural ventilation, external shading, roof design, thermal mass, insulation, window configuration, courtyards, vegetation, and appropriate material selection. The study examines the extent to which these strategies are incorporated into building design and their relevance to hot climatic conditions. The study further evaluates the role of solar control in reducing unwanted heat gain. Building orientation, roof overhangs, shading devices, recessed openings, vegetation, and appropriate window-to-wall ratios can limit direct solar radiation entering occupied spaces. The selection of building materials and envelope components is also important because their thermal properties influence the rate at which heat is transferred into and out of buildings. Natural ventilation is another major component of passive design in hot climates. Appropriate positioning and sizing of windows, openings, courtyards, ventilation shafts, and internal spaces can facilitate cross-ventilation and improve air movement. Effective building spacing and orientation can further support airflow around and through buildings, reducing reliance on mechanical cooling when outdoor conditions are suitable. Despite the potential benefits of passive strategies, their implementation can be affected by site constraints, construction practices, material availability, economic considerations, aesthetic preferences, and limited awareness among building professionals and users. Poor integration of individual strategies may also reduce their effectiveness. A coordinated approach that considers climate, site conditions, building form, envelope design, materials, and occupant behaviour is therefore necessary to achieve effective passive environmental control. The study aims to assess the application of passive design strategies in hot-climate buildings and identify the architectural approaches that contribute most effectively to thermal comfort and energy efficiency. The findings are expected to assist architects, planners, developers, and building professionals in integrating climate-responsive strategies into building design. Ultimately, the study seeks to promote buildings that provide improved thermal comfort, reduced cooling energy demand, and greater environmental sustainability in hot climatic conditions.
