Assessment of Transitional Spaces in Contemporary Nigerian Architecture

Abstract

Transitional spaces are significant elements of architectural design because they mediate between different environments, functions, and degrees of privacy within buildings. Spaces such as verandas, entrance porches, courtyards, arcades, balconies, foyers, terraces, and semi-open corridors have historically played important roles in Nigerian architecture. However, changing construction practices, contemporary lifestyles, land pressures, and evolving architectural trends have influenced the way these spaces are incorporated into modern buildings. Assessing transitional spaces in contemporary Nigerian architecture is therefore important for understanding their functional, environmental, cultural, and experiential relevance. This study assesses the application and characteristics of transitional spaces in contemporary Nigerian architecture, with emphasis on their spatial organization, architectural expression, and relationship with surrounding environments. The research examines the location, scale, enclosure, accessibility, materials, shading, vegetation, and connections between transitional spaces and interior or exterior areas. It also considers how these spaces are incorporated into residential, institutional, commercial, and public buildings within contemporary Nigerian contexts. The study investigates the environmental functions of transitional spaces under Nigeria's generally warm climatic conditions. Verandas, arcades, shaded entrances, balconies, and courtyards can provide protection from direct solar radiation and rainfall while facilitating natural ventilation and gradual movement between indoor and outdoor environments. These spaces may also contribute to thermal comfort by creating shaded and ventilated intermediate zones. Their effectiveness depends on orientation, dimensions, roof configuration, materials, surrounding vegetation, and the relationship between openings and external spaces. Beyond environmental performance, the research considers the cultural and social significance of transitional spaces in Nigerian architecture. Traditional residential environments have often incorporated intermediate spaces that support social interaction, hospitality, family activities, and connections between domestic and communal areas. Contemporary interpretations of these spaces may reflect changing lifestyles while retaining elements of cultural identity. The study therefore examines how transitional spaces can provide continuity between traditional architectural principles and contemporary design practices. The findings are expected to provide useful information for architects, researchers, planners, and building professionals seeking to develop context-responsive architectural solutions in Nigeria. The assessment may identify common design approaches, benefits, limitations, and opportunities associated with transitional spaces in contemporary buildings. Particular attention is given to issues such as space constraints, maintenance, security, privacy, environmental performance, construction costs, and changing patterns of building use that may influence their successful integration. Ultimately, the study aims to establish a clearer understanding of the role and relevance of transitional spaces in contemporary Nigerian architecture. By examining their environmental, social, cultural, functional, and spatial characteristics, the research contributes to a more context-sensitive approach to architectural design. The findings can encourage the thoughtful integration of transitional spaces into contemporary Nigerian buildings while demonstrating how these areas can connect architectural heritage with present-day environmental and user requirements.
