Assessment of Waste Management Facilities in Urban Markets

Abstract

Effective waste management is essential for maintaining hygienic, safe, and functional conditions in urban markets, where large quantities of solid waste are generated from trading, food preparation, packaging, and daily commercial activities. Inadequate waste management facilities can contribute to unpleasant odours, blocked drainage systems, pest infestation, environmental pollution, and health risks. The design and provision of appropriate waste facilities are therefore important considerations in market planning and management. This study assesses waste management facilities in urban markets, with emphasis on their adequacy, accessibility, functionality, and effectiveness. The study examines major waste management facilities and infrastructure provided within urban markets, including waste collection points, refuse bins, storage areas, sorting facilities, drainage systems, waste transfer areas, and designated disposal locations. Their number, distribution, capacity, condition, and relationship to market activities are assessed. Attention is given to whether waste facilities are appropriately located to support convenient waste disposal without interfering with pedestrian circulation, trading activities, food preparation, or other market functions. Particular attention is given to waste collection and storage practices within market environments. Adequately distributed collection points can encourage proper disposal by vendors and customers, while insufficient or poorly positioned facilities may result in indiscriminate dumping. The study examines the accessibility and visibility of waste facilities and their proximity to high-waste-generating activities such as food stalls, restaurants, produce markets, and meat-selling areas. The adequacy of storage capacity in relation to waste generation patterns is also considered. The study further considers the environmental and health implications of waste management facilities. Poorly maintained collection areas may attract rodents, insects, and other disease vectors, while exposed waste can create odour and sanitation problems. Blocked drains and improper disposal practices may also contribute to flooding and environmental contamination. The study therefore examines the relationship between waste facility conditions, market hygiene, environmental quality, and the wellbeing of vendors, customers, workers, and surrounding communities. Other factors influencing the effectiveness of waste management include user awareness, collection frequency, maintenance practices, market management policies, availability of disposal services, and enforcement of sanitation regulations. The physical design of waste facilities must also accommodate different waste types, collection vehicles, cleaning operations, and safe access for market users. The study recognizes that effective waste management requires coordination between appropriate infrastructure, responsible user behaviour, regular maintenance, and efficient waste collection services. The study aims to assess waste management facilities in urban markets and identify factors affecting their adequacy and effectiveness. The findings are expected to assist architects, urban planners, market managers, environmental health authorities, and local governments in improving waste management infrastructure and practices. The study also seeks to promote cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable market environments through improved facility planning, appropriate waste collection systems, and effective environmental management.
