Assessment of Water-Sensitive Design Strategies in Residential Developments

Abstract

Increasing urbanization, changing rainfall patterns, water scarcity, and inadequate drainage infrastructure have created growing challenges for residential developments. Conventional approaches to water management often focus primarily on rapid collection and disposal of stormwater, while paying limited attention to water conservation, reuse, infiltration, and ecological processes. Water-sensitive design provides an integrated approach that seeks to manage water resources within residential environments while improving environmental quality, resilience, and the long-term sustainability of communities. This study assesses water-sensitive design strategies in residential developments, with emphasis on architectural, landscape, and site-planning measures that support efficient water management. The assessment considers strategies such as rainwater harvesting, permeable surfaces, rain gardens, bioswales, detention and retention systems, greywater reuse, water-efficient fixtures, and appropriate landscape design. It examines the extent to which these strategies can be incorporated into residential environments to improve water conservation and stormwater management. Particular attention is given to the relationship between site planning and water movement. Building arrangement, surface permeability, drainage patterns, landscape areas, road layouts, and open spaces can influence how rainfall is collected, retained, infiltrated, or discharged. Appropriate integration of green infrastructure and natural drainage systems can reduce surface runoff while supporting groundwater recharge and reducing pressure on conventional drainage infrastructure. The study further examines water conservation and reuse within residential buildings. Rainwater harvesting systems can provide supplementary water for activities such as landscape irrigation, cleaning, and other suitable non-potable uses, while greywater recycling can reduce freshwater demand where appropriate treatment and management systems are provided. The effectiveness of these approaches is considered in relation to building design, household water consumption, available infrastructure, maintenance requirements, and user awareness. Environmental, economic, and social factors are also considered in assessing the practicality of water-sensitive design strategies. Local rainfall conditions, soil characteristics, topography, development density, construction costs, maintenance capacity, and residents' willingness to adopt water-saving practices can influence implementation. Properly designed water-sensitive landscapes may also improve outdoor environmental quality, biodiversity, visual character, and community resilience while reducing long-term water-management pressures. The study concludes that water-sensitive design can provide an integrated approach to improving water efficiency and environmental resilience in residential developments. Combining water conservation, stormwater management, rainwater harvesting, wastewater reuse, permeable surfaces, and landscape-based solutions can support more sustainable residential environments. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, planners, landscape designers, developers, and policymakers in incorporating water-sensitive principles into the planning and design of contemporary residential developments.
