Effect of Public Open-Space Design on Social Interaction

Abstract

The study examines the effect of public open-space design on social interaction, with emphasis on how the physical characteristics and spatial organization of public open spaces influence opportunities for communication, social contact, group activities, and community interaction. Public open spaces provide important settings for recreation, relaxation, informal meetings, and social exchange, making their design an important consideration in creating functional and socially responsive environments. The study will focus on selected design features and their relationship with patterns of social interaction among users. The study will assess selected public open-space design characteristics, including seating arrangement, spatial layout, accessibility, pedestrian circulation, shading, landscaping, activity areas, visibility, and the provision of facilities that support different forms of social engagement. Social interaction will be assessed through indicators such as frequency of interpersonal contact, duration of stay, group activities, informal conversations, and users’ patterns of space occupation. The study will also examine how the arrangement and quality of these design features influence users’ willingness to remain and interact within the spaces. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Selected public open spaces will be assessed using systematic observation, physical site assessment, activity mapping, and structured questionnaires administered to users of the spaces. Information obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential techniques may be applied to determine the relationship between public open-space design characteristics and observed patterns of social interaction. The study is expected to reveal that public open spaces with comfortable seating, accessible layouts, adequate shading, attractive landscaping, clear circulation routes, and appropriately located activity areas may encourage more frequent and prolonged social interaction. Spaces with poor accessibility, inadequate seating, limited environmental comfort, or poorly organized activity areas may experience lower levels of social engagement. Differences in the intensity and nature of social interaction may also be observed across spaces with different design configurations. The findings will be useful to architects, urban designers, landscape architects, town planners, facility managers, and other professionals involved in the planning and development of public spaces. The study may provide useful information on design features that support social contact and encourage effective use of public open spaces. The findings may also assist in improving the functional, social, and environmental quality of public spaces within urban communities. The study will conclude by establishing the relationship between public open-space design and social interaction among users. It is recommended that public open spaces should incorporate accessible layouts, comfortable seating, adequate shade, attractive landscaping, appropriate activity areas, and clear circulation systems to support social engagement. Further studies involving different types of public open spaces and larger user populations are recommended to provide broader evidence on the role of design in promoting social interaction.
