Effect of Virtual Reality on Spatial Understanding in Architectural Design

Abstract

The study examines the effect of virtual reality on spatial understanding in architectural design, focusing on how immersive digital environments influence the ability of users to perceive, interpret, and understand architectural spaces. Virtual reality provides an interactive three-dimensional environment in which users can experience proposed buildings and spaces from different viewpoints and navigate through them before physical construction. Its application in architectural design may provide a more direct means of communicating spatial relationships than conventional drawings and static visual representations. The study will assess the use of virtual reality for architectural design presentation and spatial interpretation, with emphasis on navigation, perception of room dimensions, spatial relationships, circulation, building form, scale, and relationship between interior and exterior spaces. Spatial understanding will be assessed based on users’ ability to identify spatial arrangements, interpret dimensions and relationships, recognize circulation routes, and form accurate mental representations of the proposed architectural environment. The study will also consider users’ perceived clarity, engagement, and confidence when interpreting architectural designs through virtual reality. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Selected architecture students, clients, or other appropriate users of architectural design presentations will be assessed using suitable sampling procedures. Data will be collected through virtual reality-based design tasks, structured questionnaires, observation, and spatial understanding assessments. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative or inferential tests may be applied to determine differences in spatial understanding associated with the use of virtual reality. The study is expected to reveal that virtual reality improves users’ understanding of architectural spaces by providing immersive experiences of building form, scale, circulation, and spatial relationships. Users exposed to virtual environments may demonstrate greater ability to interpret complex spatial arrangements and identify relationships between different areas of a proposed building. However, the effectiveness of virtual reality may vary according to the complexity of the design, level of model detail, quality of the virtual environment, users’ familiarity with digital technologies, and duration of exposure. The findings will be useful to architects, architectural educators, students, clients, visualization specialists, and other professionals involved in architectural design and presentation. The study may provide useful information on the application of immersive technologies as tools for communicating spatial concepts and improving the interpretation of architectural proposals. It may also support architectural education and professional practice by demonstrating how virtual environments can complement conventional drawings, models, and visualization methods. The study will conclude by establishing the effect of virtual reality on spatial understanding in architectural design. It is recommended that virtual reality be appropriately integrated into architectural design presentation and education, particularly where complex spatial relationships require clearer visualization and user interaction. Further studies involving different building types, user groups, virtual reality platforms, and levels of immersion are recommended to provide broader information on the effectiveness of virtual reality in architectural design communication.
