Influence of Communication Between Architects and Contractors on Project Delivery

Abstract

The study examines the influence of communication between architects and contractors on project delivery, with emphasis on how the exchange of design information, instructions, feedback, and construction-related decisions affects the successful implementation of building projects. Effective communication between architects and contractors is essential for translating design intentions into construction activities and for resolving issues that arise during project execution. Poor communication may result in misunderstandings, inaccurate interpretation of drawings, delayed decisions, rework, disputes, and other challenges that can affect project outcomes. The study will assess the nature and effectiveness of communication between architects and contractors during building project delivery. Attention will be given to communication channels, frequency of interaction, clarity of instructions, exchange of drawings and specifications, response to technical queries, feedback mechanisms, coordination meetings, site communication, documentation of decisions, and communication of design changes. Project delivery will be assessed using indicators such as completion time, cost performance, construction quality, rework, coordination efficiency, and the achievement of project requirements. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of architects, contractors, site supervisors, project managers, and other relevant construction professionals involved in selected building projects will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires, interviews, site observations, project documentation, and communication records where available. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation and comparative techniques will be applied to determine the relationship between communication practices and project delivery outcomes. The study is expected to reveal that effective communication between architects and contractors is associated with improved project delivery. Clear instructions, timely exchange of information, regular coordination meetings, prompt responses to technical issues, effective documentation, and proper communication of design changes are expected to support smoother construction activities and reduce misunderstandings, rework, delays, and disputes. Projects characterized by poor communication may experience difficulties in coordinating construction activities, interpreting design information, resolving site problems, and maintaining project schedules and quality requirements. The findings will be useful to architects, contractors, project managers, quantity surveyors, consultants, developers, and other professionals involved in building project delivery. The study may provide useful information for improving communication practices and strengthening coordination between design and construction teams. It may also assist construction organizations in developing clearer communication procedures, improving information-sharing practices, and establishing effective mechanisms for handling technical queries, design changes, and project decisions. The study will conclude by establishing the influence of communication between architects and contractors on project delivery and emphasizing the importance of clear, timely, accurate, and well-documented communication throughout the construction process. It is recommended that regular coordination meetings, structured communication channels, effective document control, prompt response procedures, and clear recording of project decisions be adopted to improve collaboration between architects and contractors. Further studies should examine communication practices across different building project types, project sizes, and construction environments.
