Relationship Between Accessible Signage and Independent Building Navigation
Abstract
The study examines the relationship between accessible signage and independent building navigation, with emphasis on how the design, placement, visibility, and clarity of signage influence users’ ability to move through buildings without assistance. Accessible signage provides information that helps users identify entrances, rooms, circulation routes, stairs, lifts, toilets, exits, and other important facilities. Effective signage is particularly important in public and institutional buildings where users may have different levels of familiarity, mobility, visual ability, and information-processing needs. The study will assess the characteristics of accessible signage within selected buildings and examine their relationship with independent navigation. Attention will be given to signage visibility, size, contrast, readability, positioning, consistency, directional information, symbols, tactile features, and the clarity of information provided. The study will also examine navigation outcomes such as ease of finding destinations, route identification, wayfinding confidence, navigation time, wrong turns, and the level of assistance required by building users. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of selected public or institutional buildings and their users will be assessed using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through physical observation, signage assessment checklists, building circulation mapping, navigation observations, measurements, and structured questionnaires administered to users. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation or comparative techniques will be applied to determine the relationship between accessible signage characteristics and independent building navigation. The study is expected to reveal that buildings with clear, visible, consistently positioned, and easily readable signage may support more independent navigation among users. Signage incorporating appropriate symbols, adequate contrast, directional information, and accessible features is expected to reduce confusion, wrong turns, navigation time, and dependence on assistance. However, navigation outcomes may also be influenced by building layout, circulation complexity, users’ familiarity with the building, visibility of destinations, and the availability of other wayfinding features. The findings will be useful to architects, interior designers, facility managers, accessibility professionals, building owners, and planning authorities involved in the design and management of public and institutional buildings. The study may provide useful information for improving signage systems and supporting inclusive wayfinding environments. It may also contribute to the development of building navigation systems that accommodate users with different abilities and promote greater independence, safety, and convenience. The study will conclude by establishing the relationship between accessible signage and independent building navigation and emphasizing the importance of effective wayfinding information in inclusive building design. It is recommended that signage systems should be carefully planned, clearly positioned, visually distinguishable, consistent, and appropriately integrated with building circulation and accessibility features. Further studies should examine accessible signage across different building types and user groups to support the development of more inclusive and user-friendly navigation systems.
