Relationship Between Window Placement and Natural Ventilation in Student Hostels

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between window placement and natural ventilation in student hostels, with emphasis on how the position, height, orientation, and arrangement of window openings influence the movement and distribution of air within hostel rooms. Natural ventilation is important in student accommodation because it can support indoor air quality, thermal comfort, and occupant well-being. The arrangement of windows in relation to room layout and external airflow conditions can therefore influence the effectiveness of natural ventilation. The study will assess window placement characteristics, including window height, position on walls, orientation, spacing, number of openings, relationship between opposite or adjacent windows, and connection with internal spaces. Natural ventilation will be assessed using indicators such as air movement, indoor air temperature, relative humidity, ventilation conditions, and occupants’ perception of airflow and thermal comfort. The study will also consider room dimensions, occupancy levels, surrounding buildings, and external obstructions that may influence ventilation performance. A descriptive comparative research design will be adopted for the study. Selected student hostels will be assessed through physical observation, dimensional measurements, window-opening assessments, indoor environmental measurements, photographic documentation, and structured questionnaires administered to hostel occupants where appropriate. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative or correlation tests may be applied to establish the relationship between window placement and natural ventilation. The study is expected to reveal differences in natural ventilation performance among hostel rooms with different window placement arrangements. Window positions that provide effective exposure to prevailing airflow and create suitable pathways for air movement may support improved ventilation, while poorly positioned or obstructed openings may restrict airflow and contribute to warmer or less comfortable indoor conditions. The effects may also vary according to room depth, window size, opening area, building orientation, surrounding structures, vegetation, and occupancy levels. The findings will be useful to architects, educational facility designers, housing developers, facility managers, and other professionals involved in the planning and management of student accommodation. The study may provide useful information for improving window placement and promoting passive ventilation strategies in student hostels. The findings may also support the development of healthier and more thermally comfortable hostel environments while reducing dependence on mechanical ventilation and cooling systems. The study will conclude by establishing the relationship between window placement and natural ventilation in student hostels. It is recommended that window positions should be carefully planned in relation to building orientation, prevailing airflow, room dimensions, opening size, and surrounding obstructions to improve natural ventilation. Further studies involving different hostel layouts, climatic conditions, occupancy patterns, and window configurations are recommended to provide broader guidance for climate-responsive student hostel design.
