The Effect of Door Position on Natural Airflow Within Classrooms
Abstract
Natural ventilation is an important strategy for improving indoor environmental quality in classrooms, particularly in warm climates where adequate air movement can support thermal comfort and reduce dependence on mechanical cooling. While windows are commonly emphasized in ventilation design, the position of classroom doors can also influence the entry, movement, and exit of air. Poorly positioned doors may limit airflow paths or create uneven air distribution within occupied spaces. This study examines the effect of door position on natural airflow within classrooms, with emphasis on how door location and spatial configuration influence ventilation performance. The study focuses on the relationship between door position and the overall geometry of classroom spaces. Factors such as door location, number of doors, room dimensions, ceiling height, window arrangement, furniture layout, and classroom orientation are considered in assessing airflow patterns. Doors positioned on different walls or near particular ventilation openings may produce varying airflow paths and levels of cross-ventilation. The study therefore examines how door placement can complement window positioning to improve the movement and distribution of fresh air within classrooms. Cross-ventilation is considered a key mechanism through which door and window positioning can influence indoor airflow. Strategically located openings can create pressure differences that encourage air to enter through one side of a classroom and exit through another. Conversely, openings positioned too closely together or on the same side of a room may result in limited air penetration into deeper occupied zones. The study assesses how different door positions affect airflow coverage, air exchange, and the formation of stagnant areas within classroom environments. The interaction between airflow and classroom occupancy is also considered. Students, teachers, desks, storage units, and other interior elements can obstruct or redirect air movement generated through doors and windows. The study examines whether particular door positions provide more effective airflow around occupied areas while minimizing stagnant zones. Consideration is also given to the relationship between door position and circulation, ensuring that ventilation strategies do not interfere with teaching activities, movement, accessibility, or classroom supervision. Environmental and climatic conditions further influence the effectiveness of door positioning. Prevailing wind direction, outdoor temperature, building orientation, surrounding obstructions, and seasonal variations may determine the amount and direction of air entering through classroom openings. Appropriate door placement should therefore be considered alongside window design, shading, landscape features, and other passive ventilation strategies. Where security, noise, or privacy concerns require doors to remain closed, alternative ventilation provisions may also be necessary to maintain adequate indoor airflow. The study aims to assess the effect of door position on natural airflow within classrooms and to identify architectural strategies for improving cross-ventilation and indoor environmental quality. The findings are expected to contribute to climate-responsive classroom design by emphasizing the importance of door-window relationships, airflow paths, room configuration, furniture arrangement, prevailing wind conditions, and occupant requirements. Appropriate door positioning can support more effective natural ventilation, improve thermal comfort, reduce reliance on mechanical cooling, and create healthier learning environments.
