The Influence of Building Circulation Patterns on User Experience
Abstract
Building circulation patterns play a significant role in shaping how users move through, interact with, and experience architectural spaces. The arrangement of corridors, entrances, staircases, ramps, elevators, lobbies, and transitional spaces determines the ease with which occupants can navigate a building. Well-organized circulation systems can provide clear movement, reduce confusion, and improve accessibility, while poorly planned circulation can create congestion, disorientation, unnecessary movement, and discomfort. Understanding the influence of circulation patterns is therefore important for creating buildings that respond effectively to diverse user needs. This study examines the influence of building circulation patterns on user experience by investigating how spatial movement systems affect comfort, accessibility, orientation, efficiency, and interaction. It considers different circulation configurations and their relationship with major functional spaces within buildings. Particular attention is given to the arrangement of horizontal and vertical circulation elements, the relationship between circulation routes and activity areas, and the extent to which these patterns support convenient and intuitive movement. The study further explores the relationship between circulation design and wayfinding. Factors such as visibility, spatial hierarchy, directional cues, connectivity, landmarks, and route simplicity can influence users' ability to understand and navigate a building. Clear circulation patterns can reduce cognitive effort and improve users' confidence when moving between spaces, while complex or poorly connected routes may increase confusion and negatively affect the overall perception of the building environment. In addition to movement and orientation, circulation patterns can influence social interaction and the quality of shared spaces. Corridors, atriums, staircases, lobbies, and other transitional areas can function not only as movement routes but also as opportunities for interaction, observation, and informal communication. The study therefore considers how circulation systems can balance movement efficiency with opportunities for social engagement, privacy, security, and environmental comfort. Several factors may affect the effectiveness of building circulation, including building type, user characteristics, spatial complexity, occupancy levels, accessibility requirements, and emergency evacuation needs. Circulation systems designed primarily for efficiency may not always provide adequate opportunities for social interaction or privacy, while highly interconnected layouts may result in congestion or conflicts between different activities. Effective design consequently requires careful consideration of the functional and experiential requirements of different users. The study concludes that building circulation patterns have a substantial influence on user experience by shaping movement, orientation, accessibility, interaction, and perceptions of spatial quality. Thoughtful circulation planning can contribute to buildings that are easier to navigate, more comfortable, inclusive, and functionally efficient. The findings are expected to support architectural design practice by emphasizing circulation as an essential component of user-centred building design rather than simply a means of connecting individual spaces.
