Abstract

Room adjacency is an important aspect of office planning because the spatial relationship between different rooms can influence movement, communication, accessibility, and the efficiency of workplace activities. Offices commonly contain spaces such as workstations, meeting rooms, reception areas, administrative offices, storage rooms, staff amenities, and service areas that require varying degrees of connection. Poorly considered adjacencies may increase travel distances, interrupt workflows, and create conflicts between related activities. Assessing room adjacency is therefore important for improving the functional efficiency of office buildings. This study examines the influence of room adjacency on functional efficiency in office buildings, focusing on how the proximity and spatial relationships between different office functions affect daily operations. The study considers relationships between frequently connected spaces, including work areas, meeting rooms, administrative offices, reception spaces, storage facilities, printing areas, and staff amenities. Attention is given to the frequency of movement between spaces and the extent to which their arrangement supports efficient workplace activities. The assessment seeks to identify adjacency patterns that reduce unnecessary movement and improve access to essential facilities. The study further considers the influence of adjacency on workplace communication and collaboration. Spaces requiring frequent interaction may benefit from direct and convenient connections, while functions requiring privacy or concentration may require greater spatial separation. The positioning of meeting rooms, collaborative spaces, shared facilities, and individual work areas is examined in relation to these requirements. Appropriate adjacency planning can help balance opportunities for interaction with the need for privacy, concentration, and controlled access within contemporary office environments. Circulation and accessibility are also important factors in evaluating room adjacency. The study examines corridor connections, entrance locations, circulation distances, vertical circulation, and access to shared services in relation to the arrangement of office rooms. Clear and direct connections between frequently used spaces can reduce unnecessary travel and improve workplace efficiency. Consideration is also given to accessibility requirements, ensuring that important office functions are connected by routes that can be conveniently used by employees, visitors, and persons with different mobility needs. Office buildings may experience inefficient spatial relationships when rooms are arranged according to available floor area rather than actual patterns of use and interaction. Organizational changes, increasing staff numbers, hybrid work practices, and changes in departmental relationships can further reduce the suitability of existing room adjacencies. Addressing these challenges requires flexible planning that considers both current operational needs and potential future changes. Careful adjacency planning can improve workflow while allowing office environments to remain adaptable to changing organizational requirements. The study aims to establish how room adjacency influences functional efficiency in office buildings and identify architectural strategies for improving spatial relationships between workplace functions. It is expected to identify key connections between room proximity, circulation, communication, privacy, accessibility, and workplace activities. The findings may provide useful guidance for architects, facility managers, office administrators, and organizations involved in the planning, evaluation, or refurbishment of office buildings.
