The Role of Indoor Environmental Quality in Shopping Centres
Abstract
Indoor environmental quality is an important consideration in shopping centre design because consumers, employees, and visitors spend varying amounts of time within enclosed commercial environments. The quality of indoor conditions can influence comfort, health, satisfaction, movement, and the overall perception of a shopping centre. Factors such as temperature, air quality, lighting, acoustics, humidity, and spatial comfort contribute to the environmental experience of users. Understanding the role of indoor environmental quality is therefore essential for creating shopping centres that are comfortable, functional, and attractive to their users. This study examines the role of indoor environmental quality in shopping centres, focusing on the environmental conditions experienced by shoppers, employees, and other users. It considers thermal comfort, indoor air quality, natural and artificial lighting, acoustic conditions, humidity, ventilation, and spatial comfort. The study also investigates users’ perceptions of these conditions and how they influence satisfaction, comfort, duration of stay, and overall experience within different areas of shopping centres. Thermal conditions and ventilation are particularly important because shopping centres accommodate large numbers of people and contain different commercial activities. Inadequate ventilation, excessive heat, high humidity, or poor temperature control may create discomfort and negatively affect users’ experiences. Effective mechanical and natural ventilation strategies, appropriate building envelope design, and suitable temperature control can contribute to improved indoor conditions. The study therefore considers the relationship between building design, environmental control systems, occupancy, and thermal comfort. Lighting and acoustic quality are also important components of indoor environmental quality. Adequate lighting can support visual comfort, product visibility, wayfinding, and the overall appearance of retail spaces, while excessive glare or insufficient illumination may create discomfort. Similarly, noise from shoppers, retail activities, music, mechanical equipment, and circulation areas can influence acoustic comfort. Appropriate lighting design, sound absorption, spatial zoning, and acoustic separation can help create more comfortable commercial environments. The study further considers indoor air quality and the influence of building operation and maintenance. High occupancy, cleaning activities, food preparation, indoor pollutants, inadequate ventilation, and poorly maintained mechanical systems can affect air quality within shopping centres. Regular maintenance, appropriate ventilation rates, effective filtration, and suitable spatial planning can contribute to healthier indoor environments. These factors are particularly relevant in enclosed commercial spaces where large numbers of users may be present simultaneously. The study aims to assess the role of indoor environmental quality in shopping centres and identify architectural and operational strategies for improving user comfort and environmental performance. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, building services professionals, developers, facility managers, and retail operators in designing and managing healthier commercial environments. By integrating thermal comfort, air quality, lighting, acoustics, ventilation, and maintenance considerations, shopping centres can provide more comfortable and satisfactory experiences for their diverse users.
